Multiplayer Guide for Elden Ring

Elden Ring supports cross-platform online multiplayer, allowing you to assist other players or challenge them throughout the various locations of the Lands Between. The feature has been a staple in the Souls series and is also available in Elden Ring.

Multiplayer Compatibility

Multiplayer is only possible between game systems from the same manufacturer. For example, users on Sony consoles (Playstation 4 and Playstation 5) will be able to interact with each other online but not with users on Microsoft consoles (Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S). PC players, meanwhile, can only engage in multiplayer with other users on PC.

Below are details on Elden Ring’s online co-op and PvP modes, requirements to begin online interaction, and mechanics for each mode.

Online Co-op

Co-op play allows players to help each other clear specific areas or defeat bosses in the game. This is useful for getting past areas that you are stuck in or helping friends overcome their own challenges.

Summoning Allies (You are the Host)

To summon allies to your world, you need a Furlcalling Finer Remedy which will cause gold summon signs left by players who are willing to help you. Approach these signs to summon another player to aid you.

Aiding other Players (You are the Guest)

To offer help to other players that are currently in a specific area of the game, use the Tarnished’s Furled Finger to place a gold summon sign on the ground. Any player who sees your summon sign will be able to summon you to their world, allowing you to help them clear the current area they are in.

Playing with Friends

You can play with friends by setting a password to their world. From the main menu, go to Multiplayer > Multiplayer Password to set a unique code that only you and your friends know.

Co-op Mechanics

Players engaging in Co-op sessions can work together to clear the area by defeating the boss assigned to it. Up to 2 allies can be summoned by the host at a time. Co-op will end as a result of the conditions listed below.

  • The area boss is defeated.
  • When the host or guest dies.
  • When the connection with the host is lost.
  • When the Finger Severer is used.

Online PvP (Invasions)

Online PvP allows players to engage in duels against other Tarnished, providing them with a challenge while going through the game’s main story. This provides a fun side activity from your journey throughout the Lands Between.

Summoning Invaders (You are the Host)

Players can invite human invaders by using the Taunter’s Tongue which will automatically enable other players to be transported to your world.

Invading other Players (You are the Guest)

To invade another player’s world as a guest, use the Bloody Finger to place a red summon sign on the ground. These can be seen by other players in their world and will summon you if they accept your challenge to fight.

PvP Mechanics

Players engaging in PvP simply need to defeat their opponent to end the online interaction. Invasions will cease as a result of the conditions listed below.

  • The area boss is defeated.
  • When the host or guest dies.
  • When the connection with the host is lost.
  • When the Finger Severer is used by the host (will only work if the host summoned the enemy player through the red summon sign, will not work if the enemy guest player invaded through the host’s use of the Taunter’s Tongue)
  • When the Finger Severer is used by the enemy guest player (invaded through red summon sign) or enemy invader (invaded through the host’s use of the Taunter’s Tongue)

Requesting Help from Other Players to Defeat Invaders

Host players can use the White Cipher Ring to call another player that has the Blue Cipher Ring to help them defeat a human invader. Online play with summoned players (friendly and hostile) will end as a result of the conditions listed below.

  • The area boss is defeated.
  • When the host or guest dies.
  • When the connection with the host is lost.
  • When the Finger Severer is used by the host or guests.
