What is a Keepsake?
In Elden Ring, the Keepsake or Gift is a special item you get in the beginning of the game. At the character creation screen, you will be asked to choose your starting Keepsake along with your character’s gender, appearance, and starting class. Getting the best Keepsake for your character is mostly beneficial during the early stages of the game but may be useful in the long-term for certain builds.
It should be noted that you are also given the option to start the game with no Keepsake at all which is not recommended, especially for new players.
Best Keepsake for Beginners: Golden Seed
For new players, the best Keepsake to get is the Golden Seed which increases your Sacred Flask’s number of uses. The item can be likened to Estus Flask Shards appearing in the Souls series which are highly sought-after by players in the games.

The Golden Seed received as a Keepsake at the start of the game is only one of a limited few you can acquire during the main story. To upgrade your Healing Flask to have the most number of uses possible, look for more Golden Seeds scattered throughout the Lands Between.

Crimson Amber Medallion

Other players might consider getting the Crimson Amber Medallion (Talisman) to upgrade their character’s maximum health, though this is generally inferior to the benefit usefulness granted by the Golden Seed.

The Stonesword Key is an expendable item that allows you to open Imp Gargoyle Locks found in certain dungeons and on treasure chests. While the key is useful, they are likely to be found in abundance in various locations of the game.
Starting the Game with No Keepsake
It is not advised to begin the game without choosing a Keepsake simply because there is no reason to do so. The Keepsake is intended to be an item that would be useful in the beginning stages or much later in the game. Because of this, be sure to begin with a Keepsake when playing the game for the first time.
