Rune Farming Guide for Elden Ring
In Elden Ring, Runes are the main form of currency that allows you to level up your character, purchase items, upgrade equipment, and avail of other features throughout the game. Runes, in this regard, are similar to Souls found in the Souls games or Blood Echoes in Bloodborne. Because of this, it is important to know the best ways to earn Runes fast to help you progress much more easily during the game’s main story.
How to Earn Runes
Defeat regular enemies and bosses.
Simply defeating enemies allows you to obtain Runes along with other items that are dropped by your slain foe. Bosses, in particular, will yield a hefty amount of Runes when killed. For farming Runes, try to find good spots inhabited by enemies that you are comfortable defeating in large numbers using your arsenal of weapons and spells.
Loot treasure chests.
Treasure chest found throughout the game will sometimes contain Runes. Be sure to diligently explore caves, ruins, and dungeons in the open world to avoid missing out chests with valuable loot as you go through the main story.
Sell unwanted item to merchants.
You can offload equipment that you do not need to merchants that have opened shop at different locations of the Lands Between to earn Runes as well. Try to farm regular enemies that drop high-value loot to accumulate even more Runes at a faster rate.
Best Equipment for Rune Farming
Below are the best equipment to use to farm Runes more efficiently, their effects, and where to get them in the game.

Best Areas to Farm Runes
Early Stage Farming Spot 1 (Greyoll’s Dragon Mount) – Magic Builds
Area | Greyoll’s Dragon Mound |
---|---|
Recommended Weapons and Spells | Stave, Glintstone Pebble (can be purchased from Sorceress Sellen in Limgrave: Waypoint Ruins) |
Runes Obtained | 8000 Runes in 3 minutes |
Procedure
This method relies on being able to attack enemies from afar using the Glintstone Pebble spell you can buy from Sorceress Sellen in Limgrave: Waypoint Ruins. Astrologers and Prisoners start with staves so they will be able to use the spell immediately after purchasing it.
1 | From the Third Church of Marika, go northeast to find a warp point. |
---|---|
2 | After you arrive in the new area, go southeast and activate the Site of Grace. |
3 | Defeat the 7 enemies that appear in Greyoll’s Dragon Mound. |
4 | Head back to the Site of Grace to make the enemies respawn and repeat the process. You should be able to farm around 8000 runes in 3 minutes. |
Early Stage Farming Spot 2 (Open World) – Melee Builds
Area | Open World |
---|---|
Recommended Weapons and Spells | Any melee weapon of your choice |
Runes Obtained | 500 Runes in 1 minute |
Procedure
This method suits melee-focused characters with no access to staves for casting magic. Simply go around hunting enemy groups that are fighting each other in the open world. A good spot to farm them is the old ruins overlooking the sea indicated below. Since the groups of enemies will be busy fighting each other, you can avoid sustaining too much damage during each run.
1 | Head to the location indicated in the map above. |
---|---|
2 | Defeat the enemies fighting against each other. |
3 | Head back to a Site of Grace to make the respawn. |
