A cutscene occurs, showing Hau enjoying the Hau’oli beach. A girl notices that you have come from far away and offers to teach you the proper way of greeting people in Alola.
Pass through the beachside area to enter the shopping area.
- Hau calls you, and takes you inside the Alola Tourist Bureau. He talks to one of the clerks, who says that anyone with a Rotom Dex will get a prize – the Poke Finder. It allows you to take pictures of Pokémon at certain areas that the Rotom Dex will point out.
- A man inside the Tourist Bureau asks you to help him record the differences between 10 Pokémon species for his survey. If you have caught at least 10 different species of Pokémon, he will give you 10 Ultra Balls!
- Meet up with Hau and Lillie again once you leave the Bureau. Rotom Dex will suddenly pop out and snap a picture of the trio. Hau and Lillie leave you again, only to be approached by a bystander. The man tells you how to use the Rotom Dex to take pictures. Walk towards the dent in the nearby wall, and wait as the Rotom Dex changes into the Poke Finder.Your upper screen then shows a Pikachu, while the bottom screen shows the controls for the Poke Finder. The Rotom Dex guides you how to use the Poke Finder to take pictures by taking some of the Pikachu. You can take a total of six pictures every time you use the Poke Finder; after which, you can “upload” one “image”. When you reach a certain number of “thumbs-up” on your photo, your Poke Finder will get upgraded.
- Go to the boutique. Get a Lens Case from Lillie, who is in front of the store. Talk to the woman in front of the boutique and obtain a Silk Scarf. You can change your clothes by buying new ones inside the Boutique, and you can change your hair by going to the salon next door.
- Talk to the man standing beside the shopping area’s Pokémon Center to get a Heal Ball, which can restore a Pokémon’s HP to maximum and cure any status conditions. A woman inside the Pokémon Center will ask you to find a Pokémon called Drifloon in the Hau’oli Cemetery. You can also find the Move Deleter guy inside the Center.
- Walk towards the intersection. One of the roads in the intersection is blocked by Hala, who is still trying to tame the wild Tauros. You won’t be able to pass there, so leave it for now and go the other direction.
You will see a man talking to a woman about seeing Team Skull members in the area. Enter the big house with the swimming pool. This is Captain Ilima’s house. You can get an Ether near the swimming pool outside, and a Lumiose Galette from Ilima’s mother. - Follow the Rotom Dex to the other side of the shopping area, where you will find Hau in front of a Malasada store. A cutscene will happen, after which you can buy some Big Malasada inside. Don’t forget to pick up TM49 (Echoed Voice) by entering the big fenced grassy area in front of the City Hall and the Malasada shop and going to the far corner. Afterwards, proceed to the Marina.
- Talk to the couple outside the Marina building. They will give you an X Attack and an X Defend. Afterwards, talk to Captain Ilima. Before getting down to business, however, you will be challenged by a pair of Team Skull Grunts. Ilima will take out one of them, so it’s up to you to beat the other one.

- A man and a woman are looking at a patch of grass when you first enter Route 2. The grass seems to be rustling, and the man explains that a Pokémon that is waiting to pounce on unwitting trainers is causing the grass to move. When you enter the grass, the Pokémon reveals itself as a Makuhita.
- Go further up. When you reach the house with the swing in the yard, turn right and back towards the direction you came from, but this time, walk up the grass on the ledges. A Heal Ball is on the edge of the second ledge.
- Walk towards the building on your left. Get the Super Potion from behind the pickup truck parked outside and two Nest Balls from the man behind the second door.
- Return to Route 2. A Delibird will appear, and takes hold of your bag. It takes you to the Berry Fields, where a pair of Team Skull grunts are harassing an old man and taking his Berries. One of the grunts will challenge you. The old man will give you an Oran Berry for your trouble. Pick up some more Berries around the area, as they can come in handy later. Go around the house at the end of Berry Fields to get Silver Powder.
- You will meet Hau in front of Route 2’s Pokémon Center. Once inside, he will hand you three Revives and stay behind to grab a treat at the cafe. A girl inside wants to trade her Machop for a Spearow, so catch at least two if you want Machop without having to catch one. Another woman is looking for a Cutiefly, and will pay you if you have one in your party.
- Captain Ilima will be standing in front of Verdant Cavern. He tells you that if you want to take on the challenge, stock up on some healing items before going in, because you won’t be able to leave until you complete his island challenge. You can choose to go on with the trial, or take it on later.

If you accept Captain Ilima’s challenge, you won’t be able to catch wild Pokémon until completing the trial.
The Verdant Cavern Island Challenge requires you to defeat two Lv. 11 Rattata and a Lv.11 Raticate in their nests, and reach a pedestal inside the cavern containing a Z-Crystal to complete it. A Totem Pokémon also lives in the cavern, which you also need to defeat.
- Walk left from your starting point to get a Super Potion, then walk back to the first hole. Press A at the hole to trigger the attack.
- Go around the first nest and into the lighted area to the right to trigger the second attack. Afterwards, go up the ramp to your left, then back towards the direction of the starting point to get TM31 (Brick Break).
- Turn around, then cross the bridge to get to the third Rattata. Go around, then press A at the hole to crawl inside. Once you’re out, get the second Super Potion. However, the Rattata will lead you to different nests. Follow the Pokémon until a short cutscene happens – it’s the two Team Skull grunts again! There is an X Defense along the left side of the cavern wall here, so get that before moving on.
- One of the Skulls will challenge you with a Lv.11 Drowzee, so use a Bug-type Pokémon , or one that knows either Bug-type, Ghost-type or Dark-type moves to make short work of him. Once that’s taken care of, find the Raticate, which is in the last hole it appeared in.
- When you’ve beaten all three Pokémon , talk to the Trial Guide standing at the back end of the cavern. Go inside the second cavern to move on with the island challenge.
You will face a Totem Pokémon in the next section of the island challenge, so it’s a good idea to heal your party Pokémon before proceeding.
- Move into the Totem Den towards the pedestal in the middle. Press A at the pedestal to interact with it. A giant Raticate will appear – the Totem Pokémon of Verdant Cavern!
- Fortunately, this Raticate isn’t any different from other versions of Raticate except for its size, so defeating it easily only means using a Fighting or Bug type Pokémon – something you should have found by now. However, the Giant Raticate will call on a smaller Rattata during the battle, so you have another enemy to defeat.[Battle Tip] Alolan Raticate’s base defense is increased by one stage. It would be best to use moves that hit multiple enemies such as Razor Leaf.
- Once you beat the Totem Pokémon , you will get the Normalium-Z Crystal, which powers up Normal-type Pokémon . Captain Ilima will also give you 10 Great Balls as a reward. Ilima then asks you to go with him to Route 3.
Once you exit the Totem Den, the Pokémon you face from here on may or may not call for allies.
Captain Ilima will meet you when you exit the Cavern, and tell you that Captains have the power to clear barricades. He clears the barricade blocking the end of Route 2, and tells you to inform Hala the island kahuna about your victory in the island challenge.
Kukui will then appear, and teach you about Z-Power, demonstrating the ability using his Rockruff. Kukui then asks you to help find Lillie on Route 3.
