Like Lavender Town in previous games, Sun and Moon has a graveyard for deceased Pokémon. This time, it is located just off Route 2. So before we find Lillie, let’s explore Hau’oli Cemetery.
Most of the Pokémon in the cemetery are Dark-type or Ghost-type Pokémon, so physical attacks are largely ineffective against them. The three trainers in the area use different Pokémon though, so having a balanced team on hand can take care of them.
However, if you don’t want to face the trainers and just pick up the items in the area, you can walk past them quite easily.
If you visit the cemetery at night, you will be able to obtain TM56 (Fling).

When you’re done with the cemetery, head on to Route 3.

Flying Pokémon are present in Route 3, so an electric Pokémon like Magnemite offers great defense.
- As you walk up the sloped road, you will see shadows circling overhead. The shadows will attack you when you get close to them, revealing themselves to be Vullaby and Spearow. Try to catch the Vullaby early on, because it doesn’t respawn as often as the other Pokémon in Route 3.
- When you proceed onwards on Route 3, you will see Kukui and another trainer waiting at a bridge. You won’t be able to pass through just yet, so walk back to the marker you passed and go left at the marker to enter Melemele Meadow. A cutscene showing Lillie looking for Nebby/Cosmog will happen.
- Go into the patch of flowers to your right, then up the ramp slightly to your right again. Get the Net Ball located slightly to your back, then up to where the man in the yellow shirt is standing.
- Go down into the flowers again, then up the big ramp to your left. Press the A button when you’re near Nebby to bring it back to Lillie.
- Lillie tells you something interesting about the Pokémon Oricorio, that it changes depending on which kind of nectar it eats. She says that it’s not actually evolving, but undergoing a sort of “form change”. As you and Lillie are leaving the meadow, you bump into Hau. Hau challenges you to a battle. Kukui will appear once you’ve won. Hau explains that after clearing an island’s trials, you need to defeat the island’s kahuna in a battle called the Grand Trial. Get back to Iki town using the bridge where you saw Kukui earlier.
Kukui and Lillie will meet you once you get to the marker. Kukui will give you some tips on facing the hakuna. Before taking on Hala, get your team healed as well.
Island Kahuna Encounter: Hala
[Battle Tip]
Watch out for Crabrawler since it can use its Z-Move All-Out Pummelling!
Hala’s Pokémon
Pokémon | Type | Moves |
Mankey (Lv.14) | Fighting | Pursuit |
Makuhita (Lv.14) | Fighting | Fake Out Arm Thrust |
Crabrawler (Lv.15) | Fighting | Pursuit Power-Up Punch All-Out Pummelling |
Hala will be using three Fighting-type Pokémon for this challenge, so Flying-type or Psychic-type Pokémon will give the best chance for victory. Bird Pokémon are common in Melemele Island, but Psychic ones are less common, so make sure that you have caught one along the way. Make sure that you have leveled up your team to at least level 15 to withstand the offense from Hala’s team.
Hala’s Level 15 Crabrawler will use its Z-Move, All-Out Pummeling at some point during the battle, so use an X Defend to boost the Defense Stat of whatever Pokémon you decide to use against it.
A victory with Hala nets you the following:
- 2400 pokédollars
- Z-Crystal Fightinium Z
- TM54 (False Swipe)
- Pokémon up to Level 35 will obey you.
In addition, you will now be able to ride your Pokémon. Riding a Pokémon gives them the ability to break through rocks even without equipping Rock Smash. Hala will give you the Ride Pager and let you ride the Tauros that he was trying to tame before.
After taking on Hala, you can now challenge the trainer on Route 3 who would not face you before.
Trainer Encounter
Name | Pokemon | Reward |
Ace Trainer Makana | Rockruff (Lv.12) Slowpoke(Lv.12) |
952 pokedollars |
Makana will hand you the Red Card if you win the challenge. The Red Card will allow you to force out your opponent’s Pokemon from battle. It will be helpful if your Pokemon is at a disadvantage because of its type.
Before you go, Lillie asks you if you could help her get Nebby home.
