Pokémon Sun & Moon take place in the Alola region, a cluster of islands with its own unique culture, and where humans and Pokémon coexist closer than anywhere else. While there is definitely a lot to discover in this new region, familiar elements from past Pokémon games are sure to appear!
The Alola Region
- The Alola region is made up of four natural islands and one artificial island.
- The region generally has a tropical climate, but varying weather conditions exist across the islands.
- The region attracts tourists from all around as a popular resort destination.
- Known Pokémon have gone through certain physiological changes due to adapting to the region’s unique natural environment.
- The people of Alola live in harmony with Pokémon and have a very close relationship with them.
- Confirmed in Pokémon Sun & Moon, players can travel across Alola by ‘riding their Pokémon’.
The Trials of the Four Islands
- The Alola region will feature Island Challenges — adventures across the four islands!
- In order to complete the Island Challenges, players must brave the Trials of each island.
- The Trials are not limited to battling. Some Trials may require the player to look for items or to complete tests of knowledge.
- Players will encounter a Totem Pokémon as a ‘final boss’ at the end of each Trial.
Trial Captains
- They guide Pokémon Trainers during the Trials.
- They are Pokémon Trainers who have previously completed the Trials and are similar to Gym Leaders.
Island Kahunas
Melemele Island Kahuna, Hala
The Guardian Pokémon of Melemele Island, Tapu Koko
- Each of Alola’s four islands has an Island Kahuna (Island King or Queen). They serve as the final Trainer to beat in a specific island.
- Island Kahunas are chosen by an island’s Guardian Pokémon.
