Using Hariyama
Hariyama’s stats consists of High base HP and Attack while its other stats are mediocre.
It can have one of three useful abilities namely: Thick Fat which allow it to come in against Fire and Ice-Type moves with ease; while Guts and its Hidden Ability Sheer Force both boost its damage.
However due to its latter ability, it faces a stiff competition with Conkeldurr who also has the same ability.
Even though its Defense and Sp. Defense are low, it can be alleviated by investing Effort Values to these stats since its HP is high.

Fitting Hariyama on your team
■Thick Fat set
Ability | Thick Fat |
---|---|
Nature | Adamant or Brave |
Effort Values | 252 Attack/252 Defense or 252 Sp.Def |
Held Item | Assault Vest/Choice Band/Sitrus Berry/Lum Berry |
Recommended Move | Close Combat or Superpower |
- The Thick Fat set allows it to come in on Fire and Ice-Type moves while still providing some offense.
- Assault Vest when held allows the Pokemon to decrease damage from Sp. Attacks.
- With an Assault Vest, its good to invest on either Defense to tank both Sp. Attacks and Attacks; or invest on Sp. Defense to fully maximize its capability.
■ Guts set
Ability | Guts |
---|---|
Nature | Adamant or Brave |
Effort Values | 252 Attack/252 Defense or 252 Sp.Def |
Held Item | Flame Orb/Toxic Orb |
Recommended Moves | Fake Out/Close Combat or Superpower |
- Fake Out is a recommended move to activate either Flame Orb or Toxic Orb therefore triggering its Guts Ability. It also allows Hariyama to come in on Will-O-Wisp etc which most Physical Attackers can’t really do.
- Apart from Fake Out‘s beneficial effect on itself, it can also nullify the effects of Sturdy and Focus Sash. This sets it apart from Conkeldurr.
■ Sheer Force type
Ability | Sheer Force |
---|---|
Nature | Adamant or Brave |
Effort Values | 252 Attack/252 Defense or 252 Sp.Def |
Held Item | Life Orb/Assault Vest/Expert Belt/Choice Band/Sitrus Berry/Lum Berry |
Recommended Move | Close Combat or Superpower |
- As opposed to the more defensive sets mentioned above, the Sheer Force set foregoes additional effects of certain moves like Rock Slide‘s flinch or Ice Punch‘s chance to freeze in exchange for more damage.
- When equipped with a Life Orb, it negates recoil damage which suits well by preventing Hariyama from damaging itself.
- Conkeldurr has the same ability as Hariyama and gains Bullet Punch, etc. Although Hariyama learns Fake Out, it isn’t recommended on this set as it removes its important effect of flinching.
Countering Hariyama
Recommended Pokemon to use against Hariyama are Psychic and Fairy-Types. However, be wary of Knock Off and Heavy Slam though. Since there are sets that have the Guts ability, it’s better to postpone using Will-O-Wisp against it.
On the other hand, some may opt to use its Thick Fat ability with Assault Vest instead, therefore it is safer to use Physical moves to deal damage.
Examples of recommended Pokemon include powerful attackers such as: Talonflame, Mega-Salamence, Azumarill, and Mega-Mawile.
