Using Lapras
Lapras functions as a durable Pokemon through its high Base HP stat with Sp. Defense and Defense coming close at 95 and 80 base respectively.
Its Water-Ice Typing is advantageous in most type matchups since Lapras has access to a wide number of moves. Although Water-Types might pose a threat due to their resistance to both of Lapras’ STAB moves, they are weak to its Freeze-Dry move.
In addition, it learns Sheer Cold which knocks out anything barring opponents that have certain held items or have the Sturdy ability.
Unfortunately Lapras demonstrates limited offensive presence with an average Sp. Attack. As a result, it is difficult to become an effective check to other types which aren’t Dragon or Water.
In addition, since it already has a high Base HP stat, it is less efficient to invest on maximizing HP by investing 252 Effort Values (EV). Therefore it is better to invest the rest of the EVs to Defense, Sp. Defense, and Sp. Attack for Lapras to fulfill a more durable attacker role.

Fitting Lapras on your team
■Basic Type
Ability | Water Absorb |
Nature | Modest/Quiet |
Effort Values | 252 Sp.Atk and the rest on durability (HP/Defense/Sp.Defense) |
Held Item | Assault Vest |
Recommended Moves | Surf or Hydro Pump/Freeze-Dry/Ice Shard/Sheer Cold |
- Freeze-Dry is a reliable STAB move that deals significant damage to not only Dragon but also Water-Type Pokemon.
- Whereas Sheer Cold is a good workaround when dealing with durable opponents.
Countering Lapras
Since Lapras has high durability which might further be boosted by ones that have Assault Vest equipped, it becomes more difficult to defeat it using Special Moves.
If using Defensive Switch Party tactics, it will be difficult to trap Lapras since it can threaten your Pokemon with Sheer Cold.
Since Defense isn’t boosted by the item, it is better to strike it with a Fighting-Type Pokemon’s STAB move to deal a tremendous amount of damage.
If you can predict Lapras’ move carefully, it is a great opportunity to use buffing moves to aim for a sweep.
What nature and characteristic combo would you recommend for someone wanting to run a speedy Sp. Attack based Water Absorb Lapras with Hydro Pump Surf Ice Beam and Body Slam?
What would you recommend for someone who is wanting to raise a speed based Lapras so they can hit hard and fast and nearly faint the opponent with every attack?
No way i only get magnemites from poke pelago.
I got magnezone.
Actually I got like five lapras’s from poke pelago so maybe its a coincidence but maybe lapras likes poke pelago?
