Using Politoed
Politoed’s Hidden Ability Drizzle allows it to summon Rain immediately as it enters the battlefield. This makes it a viable lead that supports Pokemon in the rain such as Kingdra, etc.
During the past generations, Drizzle makes the weather change to rain permanently, however this was changed during the arrival of generation 5. With the advent of Fairy-Type Pokemon and Hidden Ability Talonflame, it became difficult for Kingdra to outspeed them. This makes Damp Rock one of the suggested held items as it grants more turns for the Rain weather to take effect, consequently allowing Omastar and Venusaur to come in against Talonflame and Azumarill respectively.
Since Rain boosts the power of Water-Type Moves, Politoed is able to offensively set-up immediately at the start of battle.

- As a support Pokemon, Politoed’s main role is to set-up Rain with Drizzle for its teammates that have the ability Swift Swim.
- Damp Rock allows it to increase the number of turns for rain to be active, however this is at the expense of using a more defensive held item.
- If Eject Button is desired, Politoed can safely pass rain to a teammate that relies gains boosts to its attacks and/ or speed. If Rain disappears, Politoed may be sent out once again.

- One of this set’s main selling point is Hydro Pump which becomes stronger due to a number of factors: rain, STAB, Choice Specs and a type advantage.
- Similar to the above mentioned set, Hydro Pump complements well with Surf.
- Regardless of the Effort Value (EV) investment used, it serves as a reliable Drizzle starter.
Countering Politoed
Be wary of Politoed’s Drizzle as it boosts its remarkable Sp. Attack to launch a powerful Hydro Pump.
One option is to switch to a defensive Pokemon such as Grass-Types since they shield themselves from its STAB move.
In addition, Politoed might use Encore and Perish Song. Therefore it is advised to effectively finish it off once it dispatches one of those moves.
If Politoed is active, it is important to know the recipient such as the popular Swift Swim Kingdra which doubles it speed during rain, etc. Therefore, it is important to adjust accordingly.
Some of the recommended Pokemon are: Mega-Venusaur and Azumarill as these have great typing and bulk to resist Kingdra’s STAB moves, Talonflame is also effective in using its Gale Wings ability to outspeed Swift Swim using opponents.
Other Pokemon included: Mega Charizard Y, Tyranitar, etc. as these effectively turn off Rain, making it difficult for Politoed and its teammates to effectively take advantage of it.
