Using Porygon2
Porygon 2 should equip an Eviolite to boost its already high Defense and Sp. Defense further, allowing it to shield the team against attacks from both sides of the spectrum.
By putting a premium on its durability, it becomes more effective in crippling opponents with Non-Damaging Moves like Thunder Wave and Toxic. If an offensive set is desired, it should opt to run the other abilities Analytic, and Download, and moves, etc.
With a multitude of resistances and a wide movepool, it is difficult for the opponent to predict which kind of set it is using, which makes it effective in combat.

Fitting Porygon2 on your team
■ Physical endurance type
Nature | Bold or Relaxed |
Effort Values | 244 HP/ 252 Defense the rest on Sp.Atk |
Held Item | Eviolite |
Recommended Move | Recover |
- By capitalizing on defense Effort Value (EV) investment, Porygon2 becomes an effective shield against Physical attackers.
- The two recommended attacking moves are as follows: one of the especially relevant ones is Foul Play, this allows it to use the opponent’s Attack stat against them to deal significant Physical Damage without any Attack investments at all; in addition, Ice Beam is recommended to launch powerful damage against common Dragon-Type Pokemon.
- Toxic or Thunder Wave work well with Recover in order to slowly whittle down the opponent’s HP as it replenishes its own, allowing Porygon2 to effectively make Defensive opponents think twice on setting-up on it.
■ Special durable type
Nature | Calm or Sassy |
Effort Values | 244 HP / 252 Sp.Def the rest on Sp.Atk |
Held Item | Eviolite |
Recommended Move | Recover |
- If a Sp. Defensive set is desired, a max investment with a Sp. Defensive nature may be used to combat Sp. Attackers instead.
- The recommended moves depend on the team’s requirement. Therefore similar to the above mentioned set, choice of moves should adjust accordingly.
■ Special Attacker Type
Ability | Analytic or Download |
Nature | Modest |
Effort Values | 244 HP / 252 Sp.Atk the rest on Speed, or either one of its defenses |
Held Item | Eviolite |
Recommended Move | Tri Attack |
- Contrary to the former defensive sets, the Sp. Attacking variant of Porygon2 prefer to use either Analytic or Download as opposed to Trace.
- Due to Porygon2’s low speed stat, an Analytic set with 0 speed Effort Values is also viable as it is expected to move after the opponent’s, which further boosts its damage.
- However if Porygon2 is blessed with an increase in Sp. Attack due to Download, it can launch moves more powerful than Analytic’s.
Countering Porygon2
Since Porygon2 relies on its exceptional durability to function effectively, the best way to handle one is to strip it off of its held item Eviolite using Knock Off. Alternatively, using Trick, etc. to exchange a Choice Scarf which doesn’t really boost its lackluster Speed stat anyway, removes its held item. Be wary however as it’s not wise to Trick a Choice Specs since this consequently improves its firepower.
Another way to check Porygon2 is to determine its set, if it’s using a durable one invested heavily on Defense/ Sp. Defense Toxic will effectively hamper its usefulness, whereas Taunt will effectively shut it down.
Similarly, if you can connect One-hit KO moves, it will easily finish it off without having to take much damage or to receive any status condition from it.
