Using Torkoal
Although its overall base stat is low, the Pokemon’s specialty is defense. If you need a Pokemon that could withstand several hits while healing or buffing other Pokemon in your party, then Torkoal is a great fit for that role.
It is powerless against Pokemon with high Special Atk, but since it is a Fire type, it is durable against most Pokemon types like Grass, Ice, Bug, and Steel.
The Pokemon is also a great counter against Aegislash, Talonflame, and Mawile.
For Pokemon Sun and Moon, it now has Drought, an ability which makes Torkoal much more formidable against Water-type Pokemon.

Nature | Bold/Impish/Relaxed |
Ability | White Smoke/Shell Armor |
Effort Values | 252 HP/252 Defense |
Held Item | Rocky Helmet/Leftovers/Chesto Berry |
Recommended Move | Overheat/Fire Blast/Flamethrower/Lava Plume |
- This setup takes advantage of the Pokemon’s high resistance against Fire, Steel, and Fairy types.
- Due to having Fire Blast/Lava Plume/Flamethrower/Overheat, its underwhelming offensive power improves because of these powerful Fire-type moves,
- The Pokemon also cannot not affected by the move Will-O-Wisp, making it a more formidable Pokemon.
- While holding a Rocky Helmet, the Pokemon will also be able to damage the opponent while in defense.
Countering Torkoal
Since Will-O-Wisp doesn’t affect Torkoal, you can use move Toxic to slowly chip away the Pokemon’s HP.
If Torkoal is facing a physical attack-oriented Pokemon in your team, then switch it out for a Pokemon with high Sp. Atk.
