Resident Evil 3 Remake - Tips for Beginners

Survival Tips for Beginners

We’ve compiled a summary of tips on how to survive Raccoon City. So far, the tips are based on some resources from Resident Evil 2 remake, Resident Evil 3, and the upcoming game’s trailers and demo footage.

We will update this when the game comes out.

Dodge an incoming enemy

Zombies don’t pose much of a threat from a distance but they tend to be feisty whenever you get too close to them.

You can sprint past them when they are far away, but when you’re juggling between playing cat and mouse with nemesis and handling hordes, don’t hesitate to do a forward roll or an evasive duck.

Use the environment to your advantage

Enemies can come from both sides which could make it quite difficult to pass to the next area.

Look closely at your surroundings and check for oil drums or transformers. With adrenaline kicking in, lure as much as you can near a spot and follow up with a well-placed shot to blow the canister up to take them out without wasting rounds. In the same way, shooting the transformer can buy you some time to flee or gun them down with head shots.

Unlike sluggish regular zombies, others like Nemesis are tougher to get past which may require proper mastery of evasive moves and faster reaction time to use environmental objects skillfully. You can also rely on using the quick turn (Left stick + × button) to adjust your position to make your getaway.

Operating panels attracts enemies

Returning enemies react differently when they sense your presence.

For example, when using levers to activate the power, the Drain Deimos tend to sneak up on you. Apart from finding it up close on the ground, you can also tell when it’s near from the liquid that it secretes from above. Anticipate its reaction and dodge the attack. You should be able to punish it through a small window of opportunity afterward by blasting it with a shotgun.

Stay far away and backpedal

Some enemies like the Hunter Gamma have it easy by consuming their prey whole.

When it’s approaching, stay as far as you can when crossing sewers or other flooded areas. Use a grenade launcher to dispose of it quickly.

Learn how to use herbs

Herbs are consumables that replenish your health and can be found scattered throughout Raccoon City.

These recovery items come in three colors: green, red, and blue. Green herbs heal a small amount and can be taken on their own or combined with other colors to boost the healing effect. Red herbs have no effect by themselves but greatly enhance the healing potency when combined with a green herb. Meanwhile, blue herbs don’t recover health but they remove poison.

Below are some example of combinations from previous games. Bear in mind that these might be different in the final game.

Herb Primary Effect Secondary Effect
Green Recovers a small amount of health None
Red None When combined with a green herb, greatly enhances the healing effect
Blue None Removes poison
Green, Green A mixed herb that heals a moderate amount of health None

Green, Blue Heals a small amount Removes poison

Check your character’s status while on the fly

Even while you’re outside the inventory screen, your character’s posture can tell you how he/she is feeling.

The default status is fine which shows a character standing normally. After taking some damage, the character starts to hold their stomach which shows that are in caution status. Taking too much damage can put a character in danger status. Being on danger forces a character to limp which not only causes them to move much slower but also runs the risk of dying if they take even more damage.

Evaluate your character’s status through their posture and don’t be stingy with health items. For instance, you can opt to use a green herb to get back to full health from a caution status. You may also save a Green and Red mixed herb for when you start to limp to fully restore your character’s health.
