ESRB Rating Contains Some Story Spoilers

With the release date of Resident Evil 3 fast approaching, we dive into some of the details behind the spine-chilling survival horror game. The ESRB website released its rating which throws some spoilers to the game’s story into the mix.

Game Rating

The ESRB gave Resident Evil 3, the remake, an M rating. Having this rating shows that the game is meant to be played by players ages 17 years old and above. Three tags were given for the game to warrant such rating: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, and Strong Language.

Shots with Blood and Gore

Although the trailers have not released graphic scenes yet, plenty of the parts that contribute to the game’s blood and gore appeared from demo gameplay videos. For example, many instances involve fending off persistent enemies with guns which cause parts and blood to fly across the screen. ESRB disclosed some of it from a segment of their rating summary below.

Some attacks result in decapitation and/or dismemberment of enemies, often accompanied by large splatters of blood.

Scenes with Intense Violence

Of course, blood and gore often wouldn’t exist without intense violence. Here, we can also find some scenes that involve the portrayal of extreme violence. The scenes that depict intense violence involve some story spoilers which stands in contrast to the feature above. So far, scenes that fit the bill appeared in the Official Nemesis Reveal Trailer where the pursuer made several relentless attempts to chase our beloved heroine but only a handful of them showed violence.

Since the game involves a reimagining of a classic story, some of the story spoilers should already be familiar to returning players. Still, some players might want to refresh their memory and start with a clean slate. That being said, you’ve been warned.

Cutscenes depict additional acts of violence: a man executed at close range; a character impaled through the chest by a creature’s tentacle.

Features that involve Strong Language

Last but not the least, the rating hints that the game makes use of swearing which will show up in the cutscenes and some parts of the gameplay.

The words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard in the dialogue.
