What We Know So Far

The classic survival horror game of the 90’s, returns in Capcom’s reimagining of Resident Evil 3. Popularly known as the next remake due to the overall success of Resident Evil 2 for the current gen consoles, players once again step into Raccoon City, a city closely monitored by the sinister enterprise, Umbrella Incorporated. Here’s what we know about the modern take of the upcoming game.

The events take place before and after RE2

In an interview with Playstation blog, Mr. Peter Fabiano, the producer at Capcom said that the events of Resident Evil 3 happens in-between RE2. Although both games have a common ground, where the spread of the t-Virus sets the stage for the incident, RE3 fills in the gaps. Mr. Fabiano further explained that the events recount the onset of the viral outbreak and follows the struggle of Jill Valentine to escape from the apocalypse. That being said, while we do know now how the modern RE3 fits in the timeline, there might still be some details squeezed in that sets it apart from the classic version.

Familiar faces return with a twist

Jill Valentine, an iconic name that has left an impression to many fans, returns in the new Resident Evil 3. Much like Claire Redfield in the new Resident Evil 2, Jill receives a fresh new look. According to the interview, the concept for the style change came into fruition due to the influence of the action-driven features.

As opposed to her classic attire, Jill showcases a more practical look that involves a tank top to match her denims and combat boots. Apart from getting a new wardrobe, Jill also receives a subtle change in hairstyle. Other characters such as Jill’s would-be acquaintance, Carlos, receives a tremendous change in both his clothes and facial features. In the interview, the producer told PS blog, that they felt Jill needed a reliable ally and this led to the drastic change for Carlos.

A sworn enemy joins the fray

To complete the roster, Nemesis, the latest creation from Umbrella Europe, returns with some of his modifications. The design change for Nemesis consisted of longer pair of teeth and an inclusion of a nose. The fleshed out design of the iconic antagonist arose from the contribution of photogrammetry, a technique where the developers made use of real life textures and imported them into the game. On top of that, the producers teased in an interview that Nemesis comes with even more ways to catch up to Jill. What’s more, Nemesis also comes with a far more intelligent AI which makes him free to patrol the streets, just like the player would, and knowledge of handling various weaponry such as the flamethrower.

More zombies

Of course, the title explains it all. If the reimagining of Resident Evil 2’s zombies was a starter, Resident Evil 3’s swarms can serve as an entree. Given that Jill’s perilous escape doesn’t revolve around the confines of a Police Station, she’s bound to encounter all sorts of creatures. In other words, not one, nor two, but waves and waves of flesh-eating zombies populate the city. It appears that zombies in this installment aren’t the same bullet sponges that patrolled RE2’s police station. To compensate for their great numbers, the zombies could be less durable, albeit faster to keep up with the more action-paced treatment.

Diverse enemies lurk around the corner

If Resident Evil 2’s reimagining came off a bit stale because of the heavy focus on zombie type enemies, the upcoming one, from what we’ve seen so far, does not. Despite giving a glimpse of RE3 at such a short notice, the adventures of Jill Valentine welcomes many recurring enemy types. While zombies will dominate the streets, other areas such as the underground and sewers will contain other forms of life. From mutated fleas called the Drain Deimos, to cultured animals called Hunters, the game does not shy away from going all out with its grotesque slew of monsters.

New combat features

Aside from the perfect dodge, the game allows you to perform a new evasive action while in combat. Playstation blog reported an article detailing the inclusion of evasive actions. Unlike the perfect dodge which requires a strict execution and mastery, evasive actions can be done even without an external stimuli. With the press of two buttons simultaneously, R1 and the left analog stick, Jill can sway to the side to avoid an enemy’s grasp.

No Mercenaries Mode

Much like the replacement of Resident Evil 2’s Extreme Battle from the 90’s with a new mode called “Ghost Survivors,” its numbered title “sequel,” also gets stripped off of its bonus game, “Mercenaries: Operation Mad Jackal.” According to an interview from the Official PS Magazine UK, Capcom’s producer, Mr. Peter Fabian stated that the new RE3 will not have the same bonus game. In fact, plans for the bonus game was already revealed months prior and comes bundled with the game as “Resident Evil Resistance.” The game or possibly mode, takes on a co-op version of Ghost Survivors, with players controlling one of four civilians trapped in an area in Raccoon city. Players are tasked to outwit a mastermind who is another player-controlled character that sets traps in the same vein as other asymmetrical horror games.

If you need a refresher, below is the special developer message which pretty much sums up many of the changes shown above.

The game comes out on April 3, 2020, with copies scheduled to support PS4, the Xbox One, and the PC version.
