Super Mario Odyssey Technical Performance

Ahead of its release, there is a report stating that Super Mario Odyssey runs at 900p Docked and 720p Portable.

Digital Foundry uploaded a video which analyzes the technical performance of Super Mario Odyssey. They found out that there is a difference in graphics performance for each mode on the Nintendo Switch.

While docked, the game ran at 900p (1600×900) which is a solid performance for the Switch. This performance also benefited from the fact that the game is inside a cartridge, which reportedly runs faster than a CD.

Digital Foundry also analyzed that Nintendo may have naturally worked on it at 720p (1280×720) like most of their games for the Switch. However, they speculated that Nintendo may have worked it up to 900 to improve the game’s graphical flow while docked.

It is important to note that the early build of the game ran at 720p while docked. This is quite disappointing since this will be noticeable on a large monitor, but it is good that Nintendo improved upon the early build. The 900p Docked and 720p Portable performance is serviceable to enhance the experience of the game.

Interestingly, Digital Foundry found out that the game runs at a constant 60 frames per second regardless of the mode that the player may use. There are some parts in the game where its dips below 60, but this is barely noticeable. The photo mode is locked at 30fps, which is forgivable since it needs to render objects better when taking a snapshot from afar.

However, the Docked mode has a couple of advantaged over the Portable mode. For one, the mode has better shadows and less aliasing. This is great for those players who are meticulous when it comes to these sort of things.

All in all, Super Mario Odyssey seems like a solid game in terms of technical performance, which is an important factor due to its being a platformer. At 900p Docked and 720p Portable, Super Mario Odyssey delivers a fast-paced experience to both beginner and veterans of the popular franchise.

Super Mario Odyssey comes out on October 27, 2017 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
