Using Flygon

Its typing combination of Dragon/Ground is excellent in battles. However, there is Garchomp, another Dragon/Ground type-Pokemon that could be considered a rival in terms of placement in teams.

Unlike Flygon, Garchomp cannot avoid Ground-type moves because it doesn’t have Levitate, an ability that Flygon has.

Flygon can also be used as a support Pokemon because of its moves Tailwind and U-Turn.

Fitting Flygon in your team

Physical Attack Type

Nature Jolly/Adamant
Ability Levitate
Effort Values 252 Attack/252 Speed
Held Item Life Orb/Focus Sash/Choice Scarf
Recommended Move Earthquake
  • In order to be at par with Garchomp in terms of fire power, it should learn the move Fissure, a low accuracy move that knock outs the enemy in one hit.
  • If the Pokemon is holding a Choice Scarf, its Speed increases to 50%. The item may grant the Pokemon the ability to move first in a turn and use Fissure or U-Turn.

Special Attack Type

Nature Naive/Timid
Ability Levitate
Effort Values 252 Sp. Atk/252 Sp. Def
Held Item Focus Sash/Life Orb/Choice Specs
Recommended Move Draco Meteor/Earth Power
  • If you want it to be different to Garchomp in terms of moveset, make it learn Boomburst and Bug Buzz.
  • Having Draco Meteor and U-Turn can still increase the Pokemon’s fire power.

Countering Flygon

Watch out for Flygon’s Fissure and U-Turn, and make sure that you won’t use moves that can be avoided through the ability Levitate.

Also, since it may sometimes hold a Choice Scarf, be careful as it may move first before your Pokemon in every turn.

You can defeat it by using an Ice-type Pokemon, a type that it is very weak against.
