Using Gyarados

Apart from its durable typing and great base stat distribution, both of Gyarados’ abilities are viable.

As a matter of fact, its physical prowess is due to its high Base attack stat which make it viable as an offensive Pokemon. Whereas its defensive capability comes from its access to the Intimidate ability to patch up its defense.

It is able to Mega Evolve if desired, and this alters both its typing and ability. In terms of its function, non-Mega is preferred as it can fulfill the role more flexibly.

Since Mega-Gyarados doesn’t resist ground-type moves as opposed to its non-mega form, it is recommended that the party to be formed can adapt to this change.

Fitting Gyarados on your team

■Dragon Dance Type

Ability Intimidate/Moxie
Nature Jolly / Adamant
Effort Values Invest some on HP and Attack while keeping 252 Speed
Held Item Lum Berry / Life Orb
Recommended Move Dragon Dance
  • This set capitalizes on using the buffing move Dragon Dance to further increase its firepower.
  • Intimidate is the recommended ability as it complements well with Dragon Dance.
  • If however the ability Moxie is used, its attack further increases whenever it knocks out an opponent.

■Durable type

Ability Intimidate
Nature Impish
Effort Values 252 HP / 252 Defense
Held Item Rocky Helmet
Recommended Moves Waterfall or Aqua Tail
  • With Intimidate and a type advantage, it can place a decent amount of offensive pressure on the opponent.
  • It can cripple opponents that come in.
  • Due to a number of resistances, it is recommended to switch in when an opponent launches a Physical move.

Countering Gyarados

It might be difficult to counter due to its durable typing which may be buffed up further by cycling Intimidate.

However, it lacks priority-boosted moves, therefore it is recommended to take advantage of this absence. This should not be overlooked as it requires caution due to its possibility of using Dragon Dance.

Apart from the regular one, you may anticipate to find a Mega-Gyarados. Therefore it is necessary to adjust according to the situation.

The best types and moves to use against it are Electric as these could strike 4 times the damage.
