Using Masquerain

What makes Masquerain interesting is its possession of Intimidate, one of the most useful abilities in the competitive scene, which lowers the opponent’s attack stat by one stage once it’s sent out to battle.

With an average base stat distribution, Intimidate is a good complement since it immediately activates once sent out, softening the opponent’s physical offense for Masquerain to accomplish its role as either offensive type or support type.

Masquerain also has access to useful tools such as Quiver Dance and Baton Pass to name a few. These can be useful whether it would provide an offensive role with high base power special attacks, or stick with less damaging moves that offer higher accuracy.

A breakdown of the suggested moves for Masquerain

Fitting Masquerain on your team

■ Quiver Dance type

Nature Timid
Ability Intimidate
Effort Values 252 Sp.Atk/252 Speed
Held Item Focus Sash/Lum Berry
Recommended Moves Quiver Dance/Bug Buzz

· The Quiver Dance set takes into mind that since Sp.Def is Masquerain’s best base stat it advisable to capitalize on using this move.

· With this set, since Quiver Dance strengthens 3 weak base stats by 1 stage per turn, Masquerain can choose from either low damaging yet accurate moves or high damaging yet inaccurate ones.

· However, even with a max speed and special attack investment, Masquerain needs to be wary of Talonflame’s priority moves as it is commonly seen in battle.

■ Choice Scarf type

Nature Timid
Ability Intimidate
Effort Values 252 Sp.Atk/252 Speed
Held Item Choice Scarf
Recommended Moves Bug Buzz/Ice Beam or Blizzard

· The Choice Scarf set focuses on going first and firing a strong attack.

· Since its held item locks it to using only that specific move unless it switches out, repeatedly cycling Intimidates through U-turn can be useful against physically offensive threats.

· Ice Beam and Blizzard are suggested moves for Masquerain since there are many threats that are weak against it.

■ Support type

Nature Timid
Ability Intimidate
Effort Values 252 HP/252 Speed or 252 Sp.Atk/252 Speed
Held Item Focus Sash/Sitrus Berry
Recommended Moves Sticky Web

· Focus Sash allows Masquerain to perform several support moves even though its defenses are weak.

· Examples of these support moves are stat modifiers such as Sticky Web and Tailwind which both guarantee that your team can get some turns to outrun the opponent, while Intimidate allows it to take a hit or two before going down.

  1. Just to comment so it can be modified, this strategy guide for masquerain says it’s for sun and moon except lots of information only applies to Gen VI and below. Masquerain got a stats buff in Gen VII of 20 points in Special Attack and Speed giving it a 100 Special Attack stat and an 80 Speed stat. This means that instead of Special Defense being its best stat, its best stat is now Special Attack. Also, Talonflame isn’t prevelant in competitive much anymore due to its nerfed gale wings ability as it only works at 100% health. Other than those points the strategy guide is quite good.
