Using Swellow

Swellow is worth considering for a place on the team since it has a significantly high base speed stat in comparison to most non-mega evolved Pokémon. It merely falls short by 1 base point from Talonflame. Swellow distinguishes itself from its Fire-Flying cousin due to its unique Ability.

To complement its high base speed is its ability Guts, which helps it deal an attack that is 1.5 times its normal when affected by a status condition. This can be conveniently activated by equipping it with a Toxic Orb or a Flame Orb.

With this ability, Swellow may opt to use other attack boosting items. If this was the case, it can absorb most status conditions which its teammates wouldn’t normally take from moves such as Toxic, Will-o-wisp, or Thunder Wave, then proceed to counter the opponent with the combination of attack boosts.

Fitting Swellow on your team

■Types

Nature Jolly or Adamant
Ability Guts
Effort Values 252 Attack/252 Speed
Held Item Toxic Orb or Flame Orb
Recommended Moves Facade/Brave Bird

· Due to the attack boost from Guts, Facade is suggested to maximize damage output.

· If Swellow affords to move for more than four turns, Flame Orb is the preferred item over Toxic Orb for longevity.

· A combination of High Speed with Guts translates to an offensive Physical attacker.

Countering Swellow

When dealing with Swellow, watch out for its Guts, Facade, and Brave Bird move combination. It is unreliable to depend on crippling it with Paralysis as it often carries Protect or Substitute while running Guts. Therefore the suggested strategies are either to have a fast Pokémon that can defeat it with a faster STAB move, or to keep Rock and Steel types that can easily shrug off most of its STAB hits and deal back damage enough to knock it out before it strikes again.
