A cutscene with Professor Kukui sharing some stories with you will happen once you arrive at the observatory on Mount Hokulani, the second highest peak in the Alolan Islands. Once that’s over, join him at the door of the observatory, the big building in the middle of the area.

A trainer named Molayne is standing at the door to the observatory. Kukui will talk to him, and he will challenge you to a quick match to see if you are fit to take on an Island Captain challenge. Molayne will hand over 6000 pokédollars when you defeat him.

Go around the back of the Pokémon Center, where Samson Oak is standing. Talk to him, and he will give you a Moon Ball. Head up the back of the Center to the parking lot beside it to get a Level Ball.

The Level Ball is in the parking lot beside the Pokémon Center

Before leaving the area with the big patch of grass, head down to the lower area to get TM72 (Volt Switch).

Get TM72 (Volt Switch) on the right cliff edge past the first grass patch.

Take on the trainers down the road; there is also a Veteran trainer that give you a TM once you’ve defeated every other trainer in the area, including him. The patches of tall grass in the area contain relatively rare Pokémon such as Beldum, Ditto and the Meteor Pokémon Minior. Can you collect all seven kinds of Minior Cores?

Hokulani Observatory

Enter the Observatory when you have finished with the challenges outside. You can also stop by the Pokémon Center to heal your team before facing the opponents inside.

Once you’re in the building, talk to the scientist behind the counter to your left to get a Comet Shard. Proceed to the next room through the door directly ahead of you.

Get the Comet Shard from this man in the lobby.

Head to the left end of the corridor to grab a Zygarde Cell. Return to the middle of the corridor and enter the yellow-and-purple door.

Get a Zygarde Cell from this corner.

Sophocles’ trials

Sophocles is one of the Captains of the Alola Region, and is the one who developed the Festival Plaza. He explains a bit about the machine he has created that could summon a Totem Pokémon, when it overloads the observatory’s breakers and cuts the facility’s electricity.

Are you ready to face Sophocles?

For your trial, you need to identify the source of a specific sound that will play. A Pokémon will attack you if you answer correctly, but Sophocles will get shocked if you get the answer wrong.

You will have to navigate through the trial by picking the correct answer.
  • The answer to the first question is “Pokémon Center”. A door will open, and a Lv.27 Grubbin will appear.
  • The answer to the second question is “Rotom Dex”. The door will open again, and a Lv.27 Charjabug will appear.
  • The answer to the third question is “Charjabug”. The door will open again, and another Lv.27 Charjabug will appear.

Before the final security question is revealed, Sophocles informs you that the Totem Pokémon is incoming. The answer to the last question is “A Totem Pokémon”.

The Totem Pokémon, a Vikavolt, has arrived!

Battle Tips: Totem Pokémon Vikavolt

Vikavolt, the Totem Pokémon of Mount Hokulani

Unlike some of your previous encounters with Totem Pokémon, the Vikavolt you will be facing in the Hokulani Observatory is rather easy to beat – provided you have strong Fire and Rock Pokémon in your team. The Vikavolt will take its time and use Charge to raise its Sp. Def, leaving the brunt of the fighting to its SOS Ally, Charjabug.

Vikavolt and Charjabug’s Electric abilities also equals Paralysis for your team members, forcing you to lose priority or even turns in the battle. You should keep a store of Paralyze Heals, or at least keep a high level of affection between you and your team so that they will be able to heal themselves during the match.

The easiest way to end the battle with the Totem Vikavolt is to use Sweep-type moves such as Rock Slide that hits two opponents at once.

You will get two Z-Crystals for defeating Vikavolt: An Electrium-Z from Sophocles, and a Steelium-Z from Molayne. Molayne also asks you to return a familiar-looking mask to Professor Kukui, who is waiting somewhere in Malie City.

Once you defeat the Totem Pokémon, Sophocles will reward you with the Electrium Z.

In addition, his cousin Molayne will share with you about his Island Challenge experience and reward you with the Steelium Z and the Professor’s Mask.

From the observatory, you can use the Bus to Route 10, or fly directly back to Malie City using your Charizard.
