Beginner’s Guide in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster
This is a Beginner’s Guide for new players starting their first playthrough of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster. This guide includes useful tips, tricks, and other information that should help you get through the early stages as you familiarize yourself with the game’s mechanics.
Permanent Events
Certain actions during the main story cannot be undone and are permanent until your next playthrough (New Game Plus). The most notable of these are your choices during conversations with various representatives of each Reason (Hikawa, Isamu, and Chiaki), as well as other key characters you encounter on your journey. If you want to unlock a specific ending, be sure to answer with the appropriate responses when they talk to you at various points in the story.
Below is a more detailed guide on permanent events, missable features, and unchangeable actions in the game.
Prioritize increasing agility.
It is recommended to focus on raising your agility more than any other stat during the early stages of the game. It is very advantageous to be able to act first before your enemy does which can often spell the difference between victory and defeat very quickly.
After raising agility, your next priority should be to allocate points to your magic stat. This will help you throughout the middle stages of the game as attacking enemy weaknesses becomes increasingly important as you take on tougher foes.
Know What Skills to Use.
Combat is one or lost based on your strategic use of various skills acquired throughout the game. Because of this, it is important to know which skills to get during the early, middle, and late stages of the main story. Check out our guide on the best skills to learn in the game.
Look for healing rooms.
There are very few means to recover HP and MP at the early stages of the game so finding healing rooms in dungeons is important. You will be forced into many encounters near the beginning of the main story and being at full HP and MP as much as possible helps you win them.
Buy drinks from the vending machines at Yoyogi Park Station and Shinjuku Medical Center
Be sure to buy drinks from the vending machines at Yoyogi Park Station and Shinjuku Medical Center when you visit them at the start of the game. After the Conception, these items will turn into strong healing items which are useful for upcoming battles.
Yoyogi Park and Shinjuku Medical Center Walkthrough
Use the healing fountain only for recovering MP.
The fee for using the healing fountain depends on the amount of HP and MP recovered. To minimize the cost of using the healing fountain, try to heal up with magic such as Dia and only use the fountain for restoring your MP. Healing fountains are especially useful during the early stages of the game as you will find yourself running low on MP very frequently.
Special Pixie Event
The Pixie found in Shinjuku Medical Center which can be recruited to your party has a special event that lets her (or her descendants through fusion) evolve into a Lv.80 “Super” Pixie when you reach Fifth Kalpa area later in the game. Be sure to have Pixie (or her descendant) in your party to trigger the event.
Be around Lv.5 to Lv.8 for the game’s first boss (Forneus).
It is recommended to be at Lv. 5 to Lv. 8 before taking on the game’s first boss Forneus in Shinjuku Medical Center. The boss is far more powerful than any of the lesser enemies you have encountered thus far. It is also important to take advantage of Forneus weakness to lightning, making him easier to deal with.
Farm Money (Macca)
Macca is the game’s form of currency and is used to purchase items, fuse demons, and avail of other useful services to make you better equipped to tackle powerful enemies in the game. You can earn a decent amount of money just by going through the main story, though you will want to know the best ways to earn money efficiently. Check out our guide below for an in-depth guide on how to earn money fast in the game.
Level Up
Leveling up is essential for increasing your party’s stats, learning new skills, evolving demons, and even gaining access to certain areas in the Labyrinth of Amala. While a good strategy is sometimes enough to defeat challenging bosses, your character’s (Demi-fiend) and demon allies’ level will also impact the flow of battle. Below is our leveling guide on how to farm experience and level up quickly in the game.
