Get to Know More About Metroid Dread
Metroid Dread is a side-on 2D platformer action game and is the fifth main entry to the long-running Metroid series. This latest installment is set after the events of Metroid Fusion released in 2002.
Metroid Dread follows the story of Samus Aran, a bounty hunter who goes on a mission to explore the mysterious planet ZDR. Along the way, she encounters the familiar jellyfish-like alien beings called Metroid as well as a group of new robotic enemies called E.M.M.I. Gameplay will give an emphasis on exploring a vast network of interconnected regions marked on the game’s map with the aid of powers and abilities gained throughout Samus’ adventure.
Metroid Dread’s Story
Sometime after the events that took place in Metroid Fusion, the Galactic Federation receives evidence that the X Parasites had escaped annihilation and have begun infecting the distant planet of ZDR. The Federation responds by sending a team of robots called E.M.M.I. to examine the situation and confirm the presence of the parasites on the mysterious planet. When the E.M.M.I. robots suddenly disappear, Samus Aran, an intergalactic bounty hunter, is called in to investigate. As the sole being known to be immune to the X Parasites, Samus accepts the mission to find out whether those lifeforms still truly exist.
Upon Samus’ arrival on ZDR, she is attacked and stripped of her powers by a hostile, living Chozo. As Samus awakens and investigates the planet in search of a route back to her ship, she comes into contact with the E.M.M.I. robots which were created by the Federation but have now abandoned their previous objective in place of a new one – kill Samus.
What is Planet ZDR?
Planet ZDR is the main environmental setting of Metroid Dread. The Galactic Federation receives a mysterious video broadcast from an unknown source and traces it back to ZDR. The message displays an X Parasite, indicating that they had survived Samus’ BSL Station crash onto SR388. ZDR has numerous mysteries, hazards, and unseen dangers at every turn for Samus to face as she explores the planet’s terrible depths.
Connection to the Old Games
Metroid Dread has been developed with the idea of welcoming new players while retaining elements adored by long-time fans. Even if you have not played any of the other Metroid games, you will still enjoy Metroid Dread.
According to series producer Yoshio Sakamoto, Metroid Dread will feature a prologue sequence that will introduce new players to basic story elements. He was also adamant in expressing his view that newcomers did not need to have played any previous Metroid titles in the series in order to jump into Metroid Dread.
New Abilities for Samus
Samus progressively learns new weapons and abilities that give her access to new locations as she explores the depths of Planet ZDR. This cycle is at the core of the Metroid series.
Many of Samus’s familiar powers and abilities like her iconic arm cannon, missiles, grappling hook, and morph ball that enable her to move to hard-to-reach places, make their return in Metroid Dread.
What are the E.M.M.I?
The Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifiers (E.M.M.I.) are large, highly agile research robots equipped with the ability to “extract DNA from unknown species.” Originally dispatched by the Galactic Federation for research purposes to planet ZDR, these extremely deadly robots are now in relentless pursuit of Samus. The Galactic Federation had sent seven E.M.M.I.s to Planet ZDR, each of which has a distinct color from the others. E.M.M.I.s are also capable of a variety of tasks.
