You can do any of the fishing side quests by talking to the Old Fisherman at Seafront to upgrade your fishing skill. This allows you to catch fish more easily as you clear more of his quests.
The total amount of fishing quests is nine. Finish all of them to unlock rare species.
How to Fish
To begin fishing, you must go to a fishing spot found all throughout the game world. When you arrive at a fishing spot, press the ◯ button as indicated on the upper right corner of the screen to begin fishing. After selecting your bait, press the × button to cast your line.
When the fish has taken the bait (indicated by your fishing rod bending sharply), tilt the left analog stick back and steer it to the opposite direction that the fish is swimming. This will deplete the fish’s stamina, allowing you to reel it in and catch it.
Go to the Fishing spot
Fishing spots are scattered throughout the map. Each spot offers different kinds of fish. Go over each of the spots to find them all.
Choosing bait
Use the ○ button when close to the fishing spot to choose bait. Aside from spots, the fish that spawns depends on the type of bait. You can purchase your fill of bait from the Tackle Shopkeeper in Seafront.
Fishing Bait | Fishes | Junk Item |
---|---|---|
Lugworm | Sardine, Blowfish, and Bream | Rusted Clumps |
Earthworm | Carp, Giant Catfish, and Royal Fish | Rusty Bucket and Empty Can |
Lure | Rainbow Trout, Bream, Black Bass, Giant Catfish, and Sandfish | Rusty Bucket and Empty Can |
Sardine | Blue Marlin, Shark, Dunkleosteus, Hyneria, and Rhizodont | Dead Tree or Deadwood |
Carp | Black Bass, Giant Catfish, Hyneria, and Rhizodont | Aquatic Plant and Empty Can |
Deplete the stamina
When the fish bites, press the ○ button. Reel it in by moving the L-stick on the opposite direction from where the fish is pulling. After fully depleting the fish’s stamina, it will be caught.

NieR can go to these spots to reel in fishes:

Benefits of Fishing
Here are the benefits of fishing in the game:
Contributes to the story progression
Going over the main story requires some skill with fishing. You’ll be asked to fetch some items such as Shaman Fish. You can catch some from the wide sandy beach on the west side.
Quest completion
There are some quests which also focus on fishing. Complete them to earn a large sum of gold.
Money Farming
Catching and selling fish is a good way to earn money in the game apart from doing quests and gardening. It also serves as a nice break from combat or from progressing through the main story so try to fish whenever you can.
Some fish types like the Hyneria (Sardine), Royal Fish (Earthworm), and Rhizodont (Sardine) can be sold at higher prices. If you’re running low on money, try fishing and sell them to shops.
Catching a Rhizodont
Another relevant trophy or achievement for this feature is catching Rhizodont fish. Use a Sardine as a lure and fish at the Desert. Before attempting to catch this fish, make sure all Fisherman’s Gambit-related quest are already cleared.
