A new mechanic in the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is cooking which allows Link to concoct special Food that enhances the effects of certain materials when combined.
Cooking
To cook, Link needs to acquire a Cooking Pot which allows him to make different Food using specific materials. A maximum of 5 materials may be included in the Cooking Pot. Cooking may end up in failure when a strange combination is used, which can either become: Dubious Food or Failed Experiment, which provide minimal healing potency. If it is successful however, it may restore not only Hearts but also provide buffs for Link.
To prepare some food, you can throw between 1 to a maximum of 5 materials inside the cooking pot. This is usually found in enemy outposts. A rule of thumb is that cooking doubles the amount of hearts recovered with each ingredient used. Apart from additional hearts replenished, some items also grant special effects.
When using specific ingredients, depending on the bonus effect, it will apply the corresponding prefix. There’s a cost for adding effects, such as the case of combining several ingredients with varying effects will tend to nullify the other’s out. This is not the case for similar effects as combining them will yield a stacked effect, making them more suitable for consumption due to the enhanced effects.

*For Hearty Materials, cooking 1 will max out your hearts regardless of your overall health gauge. This makes Hearty materials highly valuable during late game stages since it can replenish as much as 30 hearts.
When cooking, there is a chance to hear a special sound effect. This signifies a critical success, which grants one of the following bonuses chosen at random:
- 3 extra hearts
- Extra yellow heart
- Extra 2/5ths of the stamina wheel (green/yellow)
- Extends effect duration(5 minutes)
- Raises Tier of the additional effect (example: level 2 instead of level 1 cold resistance)
In order to secure a Critical success, you need to meet one of the following conditions:
- Cooking while in a Blood Moon
- Use a Star Fragment, or
- Use a Dragon body part
