Twilight of Edo Japan Walkthrough
Ode Castle (Building 1)
1 | Upon gaining control of Oboromaru, go up the stairs. |
---|---|
2 | Use Shadowed Self (Y) to get past the two guards by the entrance of the fortress grounds. You can do this by briefly letting yourself get spotted without coming into contact with the guards and then quickly using Shadowed Self to get them to look around. When they are looking away, run past them. |
3 | Use the same method to go past the next pair of guards guarding the door to the castle. |
4 | Watch the cutscene and remember the two alternating passwords which are River and Origin. These will change regularly when you hear a bell while exploring the area. |
5 | Head right and go into the room at the end of the hall. Take out the Manservant by using Fireflies’ Wake. |
6 | After the fight, check the chest to get Chain Mail and equip it. |
7 | Leave the room and head back to the left of the hall. Ignore the middle door for now (there is a strong Retainer enemy here) and take the one to its left. |
8 | Go north and there will be a Ronin in the next area. You use Shadowed Self to avoid combat for now (or flee if you triggered the battle). |
9 | From here, you can choose to go north or south. The latter leads to a Manservant and Maid that you can battle if you want to earn XP. The north goes out of the castle. |
10 | You can choose to backtrack from here and take on the Retainer behind the middle door in the hall from before. To defeat him, use Fireflies Wake and stay outside the area of effect until he is defeated. |
11 | Take the exit to the northwest to reach the open area. |
Ode Castle (Open Area 1)
1 | Go up the stairs and past the patrolling Ronin. |
---|---|
2 | Cross the bridge and slip past another Ronin near the stairs to the left. |
3 | Before approaching the door guarded by the two Manservants, you can head to the left to find an Echizen Merchant hiding along the side of the building. You can choose to take him out by replying with “I will not be fooled!” when talking to him. Do so and he will drop Koban x1 upon defeat. |
4 | Approach the guards and give them the password to enter the second building. |
Ode Castle (Building 2)
1 | Inside the building, go forward to the hall. |
---|---|
2 | Head to the room on the right while avoiding the Ronin. |
3 | In the next room, take out the Echizen Merchant and follow the ninja that went through the wall. |
4 | Approach the Ninja and give him the password. After being to told to investigate the attic, ignore the ladder first and leave the room. |
5 | Avoid the Ronin again and enter the middle room. Take out the Retainer there to earn some XP. |
6 | Exit the room and take the next room to the left. Move north through the room filled with Maids or take them out if you want. |
7 | Take the door at the end of the room to the north. |
8 | The next area is another short hall. Go right and enter the door to the south. Continue going south to reach another hall. |
9 | Go left and enter the first door. Take out the Retainer inside. Then, go up the hidden door to the right corner of the room. Then, climb up the ladder to get Suijin Tab x1. Afterwards, head back down. |
10 | Exit the room and talk to the Ronin guarding the door to the left. Give him the password and go inside. You can choose to take out the Old Man here to gain some XP. Then, backtrack north to the previous hall. |
11 | Back at the hall, go right (ignore the north door) and enter the door to the south. Open the two chests to get Slice of Castella Cake x2. |
12 | Now backtrack all the way to the room where you met the Ninja who told you to investigate the attic. Do so and go up the ladder. |
13 | Watch the cutscene with Papa Rat and Little Rat. Then, explore the attic open the three chests around the area to get Koban x1, Suijin Tab x1, and Slice of Castella Cake x1. You can peep through the holes around the attic as well for some more cutscenes. |
14 | Exit the attic by going north northwest and prepare to battle Soaring Ibis. Just use Fireflies’ Wake and stand around it while the enemy takes constant damage from the area of effect. |
15 | After defeating Soaring Ibis, head left to reach the rooftops. |
Ode Castle (Open Area 2)
1 | Move south along the rooftops to reach a ladder going into the tower. |
---|---|
2 | Go up the ladder and into the attic. |
3 | Approach the chests and prepare to battle Go-Nin-Ja. It is recommended to use Firefall as you try to approach the Ninja leader in the corner of the battlefield. Use Slice of Castella Cake to keep your HP up throughout the fight. |
4 | After the battle, get Genji Glove x1 and Koban x1 from the chests. |
5 | Exit to the right and move along the rooftops again to reach another attic. |
6 | Head to the exit to the right by avoiding the trap door in the middle. |
7 | On the rooftops again, follow the path going right and north. As you pass some makeshift stairs made of wood and start going around north again, you will notice a short wooden platform jutting out to the left. Ignore it for now. |
8 | Keep following the rooftops as it comes around going left. |
9 | Enter another attic at the end and pick up the Storehouse Key and Slice of Castella Cake x1 from the chests. |
10 | From here, backtrack all the way to the attic with the trap door (where the rat fell in) and drop from there. Afterwards, you will find yourself near the starting place of the area. Proceed through the level until you reach the entrance of the second castle building (the area where you found the Echizen merchant hiding on the left side). You can choose to take out enemies you ran from the first time you passed through the area. When you are at the second castle building’s entrance, open the storehouse to the lower left using the Storehouse Key. Inside is an enemy ninja you can take out and a chest containing the Basement Key. |
11 | From here, head inside the second castle building again back to the first attic (the one where you encountered Papa Rat and Little Rat). Then, go down the ladder and head to the room full of Maids again to the left. Go all the way north to the short hall again and exit the building through the large north door. |
12 | Follow the straight path going right until you reach a building at the end. Use the Storehouse Key again to go inside. |
13 | Take out the enemies here if you want. Then, pick up Ode Shuriken x1, Izanagi Scroll x1, Koban x1, Genji Tabi x1, Shrimp Rice Ball x2, and Topknot x1. |
14 | Head all the way back to the attic where you encountered Papa Rat and Little Rat again and back to the rooftops where the you found the small platform jutting out to the left. |
15 | Jump across the platform and climb down. Approach the lamp and examine it to reveal a secret path. |
16 | Follow the straight path through the Path of Shuttered Lanterns and exit through the door. Continue following the path until you exit to an open area with a lake path. |
17 | Move along the watery path (feel free to take out the ninjas in the area if you are strong enough). |
18 | Continue swimming through the river path until you find a door going into the castle again. Go inside to reach the dungeons (going through this door ends the demo). |
Ode Castle (Dungeon Building)
1 | Follow the straight path to the next room. |
---|---|
2 | In the cells, go up the stairs immediately on your left. Keep going up to the next area. |
3 | In the next prison area, go left past the cells (avoid the patrolling enemy). Go through the sliding door and take the exit to the far left of the area. |
4 | Follow the path to another set of stairs and another one until you reach a room with a Retainer. Open the chest next to him to get Kotetsu x1 and equip it on Oboromaru. |
5 | Exit through the door to the south. Go south down the short hall and instead of going through the door immediately ahead, go right and enter the hidden door. |
6 | Open the chest inside the secret room to get Izanagi Scroll x1. Then, leave the room (you can re-enter the room to find the Maid now hiding in the chest which is pretty funny). |
7 | Back at the short hall, go left and enter the door to the south. |
8 | In the next area, go right and through the sliding door (there will be to guards patrolling this area). Avoid them for now. |
9 | Go through the sliding door on the rightmost section of the area. |
10 | Follow the hall north and exit through the door. |
10 | In the next area, go left and talk to the Ronin guarding one of the rooms (give him the password). |
11 | Go inside the room and get Koban x1 and Shinobi’s Birdlime x1. |
12 | Afterwards, exit the room and go inside the third room from the left (ignore the middle room). |
13 | You will see a man run through the door connecting the two rooms. Follow him and go up the stairs in the room next to the one you came in. |
14 | In the next area, go around and head to the room through the sliding door on the right. Pick up Kanesada on the wall. Check the chest and jar has Ode Shuriken x1 and Tenmusu x1. |
15 | Exit the room and go through the large door to the south. |
16 | Pass through the series of doors going south until you reach the next area. |
17 | In the next area, go right along the corridor while avoiding the patrolling enemy. |
18 | Go up to the large door to the north and give the password to the guard. |
19 | In the next area, go north through the series of doors and exit north to the next area. |
20 | In the next room, avoid the guard and go left up the stairs. |
21 | Head left and through another door leading to a room with a Ronin inside. Avoid him and exit through the door to the south. |
22 | In the next area, go south down the hall. |
23 | When you come around the corner, a Maid will spot you and call in some guards. |
24 | Watch the cutscene. Afterwards, you can enter the second door from the left and talk to man there (he will give you Slice of Castella Cake x10 if you did not kill any human enemies thus far which does not apply for this run). |
25 | Exit the room and head into the large room to your right. Inside are chests with Fujin Scroll x1 and Fudo-Myoo’s Fuda x1. |
26 | Exit the room and go up the stairs on the right. |
27 | In the next area, go inside the revolving door to the north and head left across the hall. The room to the south just has someone sleeping inside so go through a revolving door just opposite of it. |
28 | Follow the straight path going north and exit through another revolving north. |
29 | In the next area, go up the ladder to reach the attic. |
30 | Go south and take out the Trap Master and his minions (killing the Trap Master will also kill his mobs). |
31 | The chest to the southwest corner has Genji Armor x1. |
32 | Their will also be some Buddha Statue enemies in the area. Just take out the Shura Buddha Statue to cause the mobs to die as well. |
33 | From the the southwest corner, go right and climb down the ladder. |
34 | Go inside the room in the middle. This is Clockwork Gennai’s tea room. To battle Gennai, talk to him by the door to the north until he comes out (it is recommended to save first before engaging him). Also, tell him that you do not trust him. |
35 | During battle, it is recommended to defeat Gennai’s Electrode minions first before taking him out. Stand a good distance away from the enemies and use Shuriken Storm to pick them off. |
36 | Once the Electrodes are defeated, focus on Gennai. Simply attack Gennai up close until he goes down. |
37 | If you followed the directions above, Gennai should drop the Zenmai upon defeat, a key item you need to recruit an optional character in the episode. |
38 | Before you recruit the optional character, exit the tea room and head back up the ladder. |
39 | Back at the attic, go northwest and down the ladder again. From where you are, go down the stairs on the left. The next area has another ladder you can climb up to. |
40 | You will come to another attic. Go southwest and open the chest to get Genji Helm x1. Then, go northeast to get Grappling Hook x1. |
41 | From where you got the Grappling Hook, go south and climb down the ladder. Head down the stairs. |
42 | In the next area, climb up another ladder on your right. |
43 | In this new attic, go northeast to get Fuma Shuriken x1. Further north is Fudo-Myoo’s Fuda x1. |
44 | Head southwest to get Shinobi Gauntlet x1. Then, climb down the ladder to the northwest. |
45 | After climbing down, go down the stairs on the upper right of the area. |
46 | In the next area, climb up the ladder on the right. |
47 | You will reach another attic. Go right to get Fujin’s Scroll x1. Then, head northwest to get Grappling Hook x1. |
48 | Afterwards, backtrack and climb down the ladder where you came up from. |
49 | Head back up the stairs on your left. Back at the short hall, take the revolving door to the south. In the next area, go south again and exit to the revolving door on your right. |
50 | You should be in the room with a series of doors. Head south to the exit. |
51 | At the corridor, head right and enter the room with the paneled door (third from the left). Open the chests to get the Castle Gate Key and Fuma Shuriken x2. |
52 | From here, backtrack to the room with the series of doors and enter the revolving door on the left from before (halfway through the room). |
53 | Go north again. Back at the short hall (with a ladder on the left and a staircase on the upper right), take the ladder on the left. |
54 | Back at the attic, go south. When you come to the section with the six holes near the chest you opened before, drop down through the one directly above the chest. |
55 | In this small area, there is a chest in front of you. Do not approach it directly (there is a trapdoor in front of you if you take a step forward). Move left, then forward. Then, go right and face the chest to open it to get an accessory. |
56 | This time, turn around and move forward and fall through the trap door. You will end up inside one of the cells. To open it, use the Basement Key. |
57 | After you get out, go right and enter the revolving door at the very end of the room. |
58 | Head down the stairs to the lower prison blocks. Avoid the patrolling guard and head inside the open cell to get Koban x1 from the chest. Then, open the cell with the red ninja locked inside using the Basement Key. |
59 | Talk to the ninja who will introduce himself as Goemon. Let him go and he will thank you (Goemon will then begin to replenish some chests you opened throughout the various areas). |
60 | Exit the area first up the stairs and re-enter. Then, avoid the guard again and return to the chest in the cell next to where you freed Goemon to get another Koban x1. |
61 | Leave the lower prison blocks by going up the stairs on the right again. |
62 | In the upper prison block (the one where you ended up after falling through the hole from before), head left and exit through the door on the left. |
63 | After you get out, go right and enter the revolving door at the very end of the room. |
64 | Head down the stairs to the lower prison blocks. Avoid the patrolling guard and head inside the open cell to get Koban x1 from the chest. Then, open the cell with the red ninja locked inside using the Basement Key. |
65 | Talk to the ninja who will introduce himself as Goemon. Let him go and he will thank you (Goemon will then begin to replenish some chests you opened throughout the various areas). |
66 | Exit the area first up the stairs and re-enter. Then, avoid the guard again and return to the chest in the cell next to where you freed Goemon to get another Koban x1. |
67 | Leave the lower prison blocks by going up the stairs on the right again. |
68 | In the upper prison block (the one where you ended up after falling through the hole from before), head left and exit through the door on the left. |
69 | Go up the stairs and continue going up until you are back at the small room with the Retainer (the chest here will not be replenished). Exit through the door to the south. |
70 | Go south through this familiar hall and exit through the south door. |
71 | In the next familiar area, go right while avoiding the patrolling guards again. Go through the door at the very end to the right. |
72 | Go north along the hall and you will reach another familiar corridor. Then, head left and enter the room at the end. Open one of the chests that has been replenished to get Koban x1. |
73 | Exit the room and enter the third one from the left. You will recognize this room from before. Pass through the connecting door on the left and go up the stairs. |
74 | In the next area, go south through the large room to come back to the area with the series of doors to the south. |
75 | Go through one of the doors and then immediately exit to the left. Go north along the short hall through the revolving door. |
76 | Go up the ladder on the left again to return to the attic. |
77 | At the attic, go to the southeast corner ladder and climb down again. Keep following the familiar path until you can climb another ladder to reach another attic. |
78 | Go left to find the chest replenished with another Genji Helm x1. The chest to the northeast has also been replenished with another Grappling Hook x1. |
79 | Head northwest and climb down the ladder there. Climb up the stairs and go up the next ladder ahead. |
80 | In the next attic, go south to get another Genji Armor x1. Then, head to the southeast corner ladder and climb down to reach Gennai’s tea room again. |
81 | Head inside the room where Gennai was hiding. Then, approach the slot in the northeast corner and insert Koban 3 times. You should hear a noise in the tea room. Head there and approach the body in the middle. Then, insert the Zenmai. |
82 | The body will take on Oboromaru’s form and attack you. Defeat it (it will not put up much of a challenge at this point). Take him out with a strong attack like Wind Slash. |
83 | After O-Robo joins you, avoid stepping on the spot where O-Robo was standing when he attacked you (it is a trap door which will cause him to fall and get destroyed). |
84 | Back at the room where Gennai was hiding, approach the slot on the wall again (do not step on the blue pillow). Insert 1 Koban to turn the tea room back to its original state. |
Side Quests
85 | From here, feel free to do some exploring if you want to grab more items in the level (exit through the tea room’s entrance and back up the ladder to the attic). You may want to backtrack to the Path of Shuttered Lanterns to battle Majin Ryunosuke (an optional boss) to get Muramasa (weapon) from him now that you have O-Robo to help you. Live A Live Remake Majin Ryunosuke Boss Guide |
---|---|
86 | You can also go into the water again and approach the large shadow to fight Lord Iwama to get the Suijin Scale (accessory). Note that O-Robo will not be able to join you for that fight as he will not survive moving underwater for too long. |
Path to the Final Boss
87 | When you are ready, head back to the room where Gennai was hiding and go through the door to the north. |
---|---|
88 | In the next area go up the stairs. Then, go south. A rat here will cause O-Robo to malfunction if he is still with you and he will permanently leave the party. |
89 | Go inside the large room in front of O-Robo. |
90 | Watch the cutscene. Then, equip Ryoma with any good gear you have acquired thus far. Afterwards, approach the spirit to battle Miyamoto Musashi. |
91 | Have Ryoma engage Musashi up close using Polaris Single-Blade to chip away at his HP. Oboromaru, meanwhile, should avoid standing next to the boss. Instead, try to position him diagonal below or above and use Wind Slash or Ninja Strength. Heal Ryoma if you need to and Musashi should go down eventually. |
92 | Afterwards, approach the shutter where Lord Ode fled and follow the path. |
93 | As you come up the stairs, Yodogimi will attack you. Simply use the same strategy s the one against Musashi and she should go down fairly easily as well. |
94 | After defeating Yodogimi, continue up the stairs. Approach the large door and a Maid will give you Maid’s Obi. Stand still for a moment and the Maid will scream. She will then give you Medicine Box. |
95 | Enter the large door and prepare to battle Lord Ode Lou. He should not be too hard. Simply wail on him with your strongest attacks until he is defeated. |
96 | Watch the cutscene. Afterwards prepare to battle Ode Lou again in his Frogsnake demon form. |
97 | Have Ryoma use Polaris Single Blade to damage the final boss up close. Have Oboromaru use Ninja Strength and Wind Slash from the back. As much as possible, you want to avoid standing diagonally from the Ode Lou to avoid his Drink Blood attack which heals him. Use Fireflies Wake or Water Arts when the final boss transforms the tiles to poison as well. Do not hesitate to use items like Slice of Castella Cake or Izanagi Scroll when your HP is low. |
98 | Once Ode Lou is defeated, watch the cutscene and ending. |

Okay, most of the walkthrough is right, except for an important key point. Namely, the place where the Castle Key key item is. I have no idea where it is, but I know where it isn’t, and it isn’t in the wall trap room with three chests. The shurikens are there as expected, but instead of the key there is a Kiku-ichimonji.
