Merchant
The Merchant Family Trade is a good profession to choose for solo players since you will be able to conveniently buy various useful items by raising the production level. Note that the family shop is the only way to purchase Ultimite and Dark Sphere used to craft Ultima Weapons. You will also get discounts and can sell your unwanted goods for more Gil by raising production level as well.
Production Level | Items |
---|---|
Starting Level | Bronze, Iron, Alloy, Meat, Milk, Spring Water |
1 | Adds: Bronze Shard, Iron Shard, Silver, Gold, Mythril |
2 | Adds: Chilly Gel, Magma Rock, Thunderball |
3 | Adds: Ultimite, Dark Sphere |
Blacksmith
The Blacksmith Family Trade allows you to receive weapons and armor from your family by sending them the required materials to craft them. Choosing this Family Trade is recommended for beginners, especially for solo play, as you will be able to craft Legendary and Greatest Weapons by raising production level to 2 and 3 respectively. Discounts for crafting services also apply when production level is increased.

Alchemist
Choosing the Alchemist Family Trade lets you receive an equipment scroll each year. It is also arguably the best Family Trade to choose as it is the only way to obtain the Force Ring Scroll and Ultima Weapon Scroll. These equipment scrolls allow you to craft two of the best equipment in the game and is highly recommended for taking on the high difficulty dungeons after clearing the main story.
Production Level | Scroll Received |
---|---|
1 | Iron Armor Scroll |
2 | Warrior Weapon Scroll |
3 | Flame Craft Scroll |
4 | Clockwork Scroll |
5 | Mythril Armor Scroll |

Tailor
The Tailor Family Trade grants you access to an accessory maker right at your hometown by turning in the required materials. This is extremely convenient since the only other accessory maker is found in Shella which is a good distance away from your starting location. As with the Blacksmith Family Trade, new craftable items and service discounts will be available by increasing your family’s production level.
Production Level | Craftable Accessories |
---|---|
Starting Level | Flame Craft, Frost Craft, Lightning Craft, Clockwork |
1 | New Clockwork, Blue Yarn, Tome of Wisdom, Tome of Speed, Fiend Kit, Fairie Kit, Eyewear Techniques, Goggle Techniques |
2 | White Yarn, Gold Craft, Secrets of Wisdom, Secrets of Speed, Daemon Kit, Angel Kit, Designer Glasses, Designer Goggles |
3 | Ring of Invincibility |
Farmer
The Farmer Family Trade lets you receive wheat every year by sending your family wheat seeds in letters. Wheat can then be sold at shops for some extra Gil. You will also sometimes receive Bannock, a healing item, from your family if you chose this family trade. Since there are very few exclusive benefits enjoyed from the Farmer Family Trade, it is not highly recommended.
Miller
The Miller Family Trade allows you to get flour every year when there is a Farmer family in your hometown (Tipa). This trade is very similar to the Farmer since flour is mostly only for selling at shops to earn a small profit. You may also receive Bannock occasionally if there is a farmer in town. The Miller Family Trade is not recommended because of its minimal benefits.
Fisherman
The Fisherman Family Trade is fairly useful as receiving fish every year and eating them restores HP and grants you a temporary increase in strength. You can also just sell the fish for a small profit. Aside from these, there is really no point in choosing this Family Trade over the Alchemits, Blacksmith, Tailor, and Merchant trades.
Rancher
The Rancher Family Trade’s relevance in the game is nearly the same as that of the Fisherman Trade. Eating meat grants you a temporary increase in strength. After the third year in the game, your family will start sending you milk as well that you can drink to restore HP or sell off at shops. The Rancher Family Trade is not recommended because of the little advantages it offers.
