What to Do at the Start of the Game
Choose your Tribe
You must choose a tribe (race) when creating a new character in the game. The four tribes are Clavat, Lilty, Yuke, and Selkie that each have unique traits and characteristics that largely determine your playstyle in single player and multiplayer.
Which Tribe Should You Choose?
Some tribes might be easier for beginners to choose, especially in single player so it is worth selecting one that lets you become familiar with the game’s mechanics more easily. Note that you cannot change your tribe afterwards.
Pick a Family Trade.
Another important feature in the game is your Family Trade which grants you various benefits that range from regularly receiving food from your family, availing you discounts at the family shop, or being able to purchase exclusive crafting scrolls and materials. As with your character’s Tribe, you cannot switch to a different Family Trade afterwards.
Create multiple characters with different Family Trades.
By creating multiple characters in your save file, Tipa (your hometown) will be inhabited by other families. This is useful for having your starting location populated by various shops of different trades. You can easily buy useful items at the start of the game this way.
Collect the Moogle Stamp in Tipa.
Before even leaving Tipa, you should examine the hole behind the town’s crystal to find your very first Moogle Stamp. Finding these collectibles allows you to obtain Memory Crystals which are used for purchasing Mimic Skins that change your appearance to that of certain named characters in the story.

Secondary characters can also be played in the main story. However, your first or main character’s upgrades will not be carried over to your other characters.
So, are the secondary characters and their families only useful to receive items from and not playable individually in the single player mode (which is all I have).
