Can You Change the Difficulty in Octopath Traveler 2?
Game difficulty cannot be changed.
Similar to the first game, Octopath Traveler 2 will not allow players to change the difficulty at any point during the main story. When starting a New Game, you will immediately notice the absence of any option to select a difficulty mode. There is also no way to adjust the difficulty from the game’s settings.
Make the game “easier” by understanding the game’s mechanics.
This news may come as no surprise to veterans of the first game. Beginners, however, can turn to other ways to make the game “easier,” despite the lack of an actual “easy” mode being implemented. This involves understanding mechanics and other elements in battle.
Know each character’s unique Talents, abilities, and skills.
Much like traditional JRPGs, knowing how to use the unique Talents, abilities, and skills of each of the 8 Travelers (playable characters) in the game is essential to winning encounters. Based on how well you synergize each member of the party to amplify their strengths and compensate for weaknesses will determine whether the battle will be easily won or not.

Exploiting enemy weaknesses and breaking.
Another important element to consider is knowing an enemy’s vulnerabilities. Osvald, a scholar and one of the game’s playable characters, has the unique Talent Study Foe which lets him view an enemy’s weaknesses which are normally hidden at the start of the battle.

Most foes in the game are weak against at least one type of attack so exploiting them as much as possible will make it easier for you to take them down. Upon targeting an enemy’s vulnerability, you can reduce their Shield Points indicated by the numbered shield icon under their character sprite.
When an enemy’s Shield Points have been reduced to zero, they will enter a “break” state. This causes them to end their current turn and be denied their next one. It is also during this helpless condition that any of your follow-up attacks will deal more damage to the enemy.
Using the right equipment.
Equipment such as weapons, body armor, and accessories all provide offensive and defensive bonuses to a character in addition to bonus attributes such as increased speed or evasion. As you go through the game’s main story, be sure to collect as much gear as you can by exploring dungeons, using Path Actions in towns, or purchasing items from shops.
Healing items will also come in handy to improve your party’s survivability when the odds are against you in battle. Because of this, make it a habit to stock up on consumables like Healing Grapes in the early stages of the game.
