Carmen

Carmen represents the Lovers Arcana, clothed in a scarlet flamenco gown which looks like a huge flower. Her waist is decorated with a bouquet of flowers, with thorns protruding from the ends and extend into a whip. Miniature gentlemen surround her on ether side. Their heads, encased in heart-shaped caskets, connect to the spiky whip-like stem. Carmen’s limbs are covered in lengthy boots while her face is hidden by a panther mask.

A creation of Mérimée, Carmen is a gypsy who debuted in Mérimée’s 1845 novella. Carmen, known as the “femme fatale”, relies on her charm to lure men. Eventually, she becomes tired and leaves the man to seek for a new victim. Due to her ties before as a tobacco worker, she is commonly shown smoking a cigarette.
