What is Skill Potential?

Skill Potential is a gameplay mechanic in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (SMT 5: Vengeance) which affects the power of various types of skills in battle. In general terms, skill types that align with the protagonist’s (Nahobino) or demon allies’ affinities will usually become more powerful, while skill types that correspond to a character’s weaknesses will be weaker. You can view each character’s Skill Potential values at the upper right corner of the stats screen.

Skill Name Modifiers

When a skill is being enhanced by a character’s natural affinities, it will have a “+” and a numerical value at the end. Skills that are weakened because of the character’s weaknesses, meanwhile, have a “-“.

As an example, the demon Archangel has a Fire Skill Potential of +1. Therefore, any Fire skills that he has or will learn will have the “+1” modifier at the end of its name (e.g., Agilao +1, Maragi +1).

Skill Potential values are fixed for all demon allies while the protagonist’s can be enhanced by acquiring certain Miracles from Sophia in the World of Shadows.

How to Increase Nahobino’s Skill Potentials

Purchase Miracles from Sophia in the World of Shadows

As mentioned, the protagonist (Nahobino) is the only character in the game who can alter his Skill Potential values by acquiring Miracles using Glory. This allows you to build his set of skills freely according to your preferences, eventually gaining favorable values for all types of skills.

Using Demon Essences (Essence Fusion)

Skill Potential directly ties in with the process of using Demon Essences as the latter allows you to transfer certain skills to the protagonist or any ally demon. Naturally, you will want to acquire skills that you have positive (+) Skill Potential values instead of those with negative (-) values.
