Demon Essences are a new type of skill mechanic introduced in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (SMT 5: Vengeance). In simple terms, Essences are special items that contain a demon’s skills and affinities which can be transferred to the main character (Nahobino) and to other demon allies through Essence Fusion.
How to Get Essences
Essences can be obtained from treasure boxes and Amalgams while exploring the field or acquired directly from demons by fulfilling requests (subquests).

Essence Fusion Effects
As mentioned, the main character Nahobino and his demon allies will be able to inherit the skills and affinities contained in an Essence, allowing you to adjust their characteristics and abilities to gain the advantage against specific enemies in the game. This makes Essences function somewhat similarly to Magatama in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster (SMT 3: Nocturne HD Remaster), though the latter were only usable by the main character.
How to Use Essences
You can use Essences in Essence Fusion to obtain skills and elemental affinities for Nahobino or for any of your acquired demons in the World of Shadows. Select an Essence from those you have acquired throughout the game and choose whether to inherit skills or affinities.

How to Inherit Skills from Essences
Each Essence contains a demon’s set of skills which give you the freedom to pick which ones you want to equip on your character or demon ally. Experiment with the best combinations with your team when going up against tough enemies, especially bosses, to gain the upper-hand in battle.
How to Inherit Affinities from Essences
You can also choose to implant a demon’s set of weaknesses and resistances into your character or demon ally which can drastically change match-ups against foes encountered throughout the main story.
