Demon Negotiation is a key gameplay mechanic in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance (SMT 5: Vengeance) that allows you to interact with enemy demons in battle. It can be done by the main character (Nahobino) as well as demon allies in your party.

Recruit demons.

Among the most notable advantages of Demon Negotiation is being able to recruit enemy demons you encounter in dungeons to your party. Before they agree to join you, they will sometimes as for money (Macca) and items. Some demons will even ask that you let them drain a portion of your HP to earn their favor.

Demons do not have to be alone to be negotiated with.

Unlike in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster (SMT 3: Nocturne), it is possible to negotiate with enemy demons even when they are accompanied by their allies in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance.

Be aware of the current Moon Phase.

How to Do Demon Negotiation

During battle, you can have a conversation with the enemy demon (demonic request) by selecting TALK. Basically when then demon conversation starts, items are requested one after another, and if the demon is satisfied, you may be able to make them your new companion.

There are instances that even if you talk and gave lot of items during the demon conversation, the demon will suddenly withdraws from the battle. Also, even if the demon is satisfied, they may just leave by getting an item, so basically there is no guaranteed way but to do it multiple of times when you encounter a demon.

If it’s your first time seeing that demon, it is worth to actively try demon conversation.

Special Demon Conversations

Various demons in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance are connected to each other in terms of their lore or backstory. Bringing along an ally demon in your party that has some history with a demon you encounter in dungeons will trigger Special Demon Conversations. Their dialogue will reveal interesting bits of information that imply rivalries, grudges, and even mutual respect.
