Yakuza: Like a Dragon, also known as Ryuu ga Gotoku 7: Hikari to Yami no Yukue (龍が如く7 光と闇の行方), is a single-player adventure/role-playing game developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for their other titles such as the Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, Judgement, and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz HD.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the seventh title of the Yakuza series but the number is removed in the English version since the release is being marketed as a soft reboot of the franchise. The game still takes place in the same world of the Yakuza series but shifts away from Tokyo and features to a new protagonist. Also, the game is doing away its brawler and beat’ em up mechanics for a turn-based battle style. Yakuza: Like a Dragon will offer both Japanese and English audio to the player.

Story

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is set at Isezaki Ijincho, a district in Yokohama, and focuses on the life of Ichiban Kasuga. Unlike the previous protagonist, Kazamu Kiryu, Kasuga is an emotional and outspoken character.

The game is coming off from Kasuga’s finished 18-year imprisonment. He returns to his Yakuza clan patriarch, Masumi Arakawa, but he was forgotten. He was thrown away and eventually shot in the chest. Kasuga wakes up half-naked under a pile of trash within Yokohama.

He sets out on his personal journey to uncover the truth while also facing other yakuza, triad, and Korean gangsters and criminals along the way. He eventually leads into a path of becoming a hero while being supported by other playable characters and allies he meets along the way.

Gameplay

Battle System

Yakuza: Like a Dragon departs from its long-running action-based battle system to turn-based.

The new battle system will feature a four-person team where party members can pick up items near their enemy and use it to damage them. Also, the characters can still kick objects towards the enemy. There are also various party assist options that can boost the party or defeat enemies. Party assist options are accessed and will increase by playing the game’s main story and also completing substories.

Substories, Side Quests, and Mini Games

In addition to main story chapters, the game also features other elements such as Substories, side quests, and mini games.

Substories are additional small-scale stories the player can choose to pursue. Once, a player is finished with a particular susbstory, he/she can acquire bonus character experience, item rewards, and unlocked new features.

Side quests are under the game’s Part-Time Hero feature. These side quests are additional missions that can benefit the characters.

Mini Games are still present such as karaoke where you can listen to your characters sing the game’s infamous song, “Baka Mitai”. A new side activity, Dragon Kart is introduced where Kasuga can do kart racing and compete against others for additional prizes.
