PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds / PUBG - Basic Skills and Techniques

This article contains some basic skills and tips for beginners that are essential for playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds [PUBG].

Basic Skills and Techniques

As a beginner, jumping in with the gun firing doesn’t often bode well. There are some basic skills and techniques that need to be learned in order to be effective in and out of battle. Since the game is thematically a battle royale, the community may not be as helpful in-game, as they would be giving away their position and advantage. But don’t fret – we’ve got you covered. Here are some essential skills you’ll need to navigate the Battlegrounds:

Reading maps and calculating distances

In PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds [PUBG], one of the most basic skills needed to survive is the ability to read a map. This skill is known as Map Awareness, in which the player has almost a full understanding of what is happening in the map. With this particular skill, players can estimate where the biggest clash is happening and can either join it or avoid it. Also, having this map awareness will help the player work with the Battle Area Mechanics better.

Knowing which ammo matches what

Certain guns in the game use the same ammunition whereas others don’t. One particular gun class, the Pistols, are the most commonly found weapons in-game. Because they are the most commonly found, they have a wide variety of bullets to choose from. One of the most basic skills in this game requires the player to know which ammo matches which gun so they are not eliminated early.

How to use one’s weapons

Different guns mean different ranges of damage and effectiveness. For this reason, some players may not be comfortable with some weapons. Others may not even like guns at all and would rather defeat enemies with more primitive means such as the Crossbow or the Frying Pan. But for those who like using guns, there are several types to choose from, all with differing characteristics: the assault rifles, sniper rifles, DMRs, and Pistols.

Using the terrain

Using the terrain to one’s advantage will not only extend their survivability but also give them a chance of winning outright. Knowledge of the surrounding features allows players to hide, ambush their enemies, and even locate particular items. Among those items are vehicles, which allow for speedy movement around the map (useful when you need to get to the playable area quickly). Understanding the terrain gives players the upper hand in eliminating a variety of opponents, particularly the grizzled veterans of PUBG.

Know how to drive

Driving a vehicle in-game will not only get the player around quickly, but the vehicle itself serves as a mobile shield. However, the vehicle’s efficacy as a shield depends on if the vehicle in question is covered all around. If you’re driving a Buggy or something similar, then it won’t be able to shield you as much. So before you get behind the wheel, make sure you know what you’re driving and how to how to drive it.
