Game Overview

Tales of Arise is a single-player, action role-playing game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. It is the seventeenth main entry of the Tales series and it follows Tales of Berseria, the previous entry that launched last August 18, 2016, for the PlayStation 3 and January 24, 2017, for the PlayStation 4 and PC.

Tales of Arise was originally scheduled for a 2020 release but was delayed due to quality issues. Also, the change of schedule was influenced by new platforms such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Tales of Arise will come out this September 10, 2021, for all console platforms both physical and digital.

The game aims to target veterans, fans, and newcomers to the JRPG series. The same development team from Tales of Berseria also worked for Tales of Arise. Among those who returned to work in this game is Minoru Iwamoto. He previously worked as an artist for Tales of Zestiria and Tales of Berseria and is now a character designer and art director for Tales of Arise.

Story

Tales of Arise’s main story takes place between two planets called Rena and Dahna. Rena has ruled over Dahna by pillaging the planet’s resources and stripping its people from their dignity and freedom. While under enslavement, Rena divided the Dahna through walls and let lords rule over them.

The game begins with two main characters Alphen and Shionne, who came from each planet, wanting to change their fate and liberate their people. Shionne can use the power of astral artes and lets Alphen wield the Blazing Sword that she can create. They are joined by other characters namely Rinwell, Law, Kisara, and Dohalim il Qaras along the way and helps them create a new future for both planets.

Gameplay

Tales of Arise features returning gameplay systems from previous titles with a fresh take. Here is a quick rundown of Tales of Arise’s unique gameplay experience:

Field Exploration

Similar to previous titles, you can explore certain areas in the game while traveling from one major location to another. You can pick up items from chests, plants, and other objects of interest. A new feature introduced is swimming, where you can pick up more objects in shallow waters.

Combat System

An updated version of the Linear Motion Battle System (LMBS) is implemented in Tales of Arise. In this game, three ground artes and three aerial artes can be set by the player. While the player simultaneously presses these set artes, an additional three ground and three aerial artes can be used when a character leaps. Post-battle field chats will replace the post-battle victory quotes happening on the battlefield.

Character Development

As you progress through the game, characters will gain new titles and can be attached to five nodes. Each node can grant a new arte, skill, or a permanent stat boost.
