Death Stranding will feature a key mechanic called "likes" to pursue director Hideo Kojima's newly-described "social strand system" genre of games.

Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima described the concept of “connections” as being central to the upcoming title’s narrative and gameplay. Perhaps to explore this theme in his latest work, Mr. Kojima and his development team implemented a key feature called “likes.”

What are Likes?

A familiar term in this age of widespread social media, likes are implied to be a form of currency in Death Stranding. The Tokyo Game Show 2019 demo revealed a number of ways players can earn them, though there was little information on what they are used for. It is assumed that likes are used to purchase and upgrade equipment or unlock more gameplay features.

How to Earn Likes

Completing Missions

After completing missions, players will be evaluated based on the condition of the package delivered. The better its condition upon arrival, the more likes are rewarded.

Sharing Equipment with Other Players

Players can earn likes each time another player uses any of their equipment. This includes deployed ladders, climbing anchors, and even shoes left behind.

According to an interview with Mr. Kojima, placed objects with few likes may disappear from the world. Those with many likes will remain.

Letting Other Players Use Installations

Owners of postboxes and shelters will also obtain likes when people use their installed facilities. Postboxes are owned storage spaces for sharing items with other players. Shelters, on the other hand, are roofed constructs where players can take refuge from the rain.

Allowing Other Players to Discover Cairns

A cairn will be created in the spot where a player has rested. Likes are earned when other people discover the cairn in the open world.

Finding Dropped Cargo

Players can get likes by finding containers dropped by other players. These can presumably be deposited at the owner’s postbox, allowing the player who returned it to obtain more likes.

Playing Music for BB

A like is earned for playing music for BB. In the TGS 2019 demo, the player earned a like by playing a tune with a harmonica to soothe the infant.

Take Selfies Using the Safe House Mirror

Taking selfies using the safe house mirror is another way to get likes. Having Sam wear various accessories in certain combinations may be required for this.

Being “Sent” Additional Likes

Additional likes can be “sent” to players, according to Mr. Kojima. This, he said, was akin to giving someone a tip in appreciation of good service rendered. There was, however, no elaboration on how many additional likes a player can give to people online.
