Speakers versus Headphones

This is a Playerunknown's Battlegrounds articles on Speakers versus Headphones for sound. Here are some insights in comparing the two kinds of hardware.

Sound design can make or break your gaming experience. It’s best you know what’s better to use in a sound-reliant game like Battlegrounds. In this article, I will discuss about the differences between playing the game on my speakers, or playing the game on my headphones. So, speakers versus headphones? We find out below!

Speakers versus Headphones

Today I played a few games in Battlegrounds with my speakers on. I never got to kill anyone on most of them, but they are still some interesting insights one can gain from my experience. I played a solo match before I got too chicken and just simply played with automatchmaking squads.  Afterwards, I chose to play a few games with headphones to really see the difference.

Hardware

I use Edifier M1386 speakers for my sound. Unstrategically, all speakers, including the subwoofer, were under my desk to go along with the PC. This placement alone might contribute a lot to the quality of the sound design in-game.

For my headphones, I used Genius HS-03u Headset–an old purchase that I have trouble with at times due to some breaks.

Findings

I played about three games on speaker, and switched to my headphones immediately afterwards. In my first three games, like I said, I played one solo game and two squad games (at least). Here are some of my findings:

  • Playing PUBG with speakers means having to suffer hearing the annoying voices in the lobby, as well as the incredibly loud whirr of the airplane as it flies over the island.
  • It was a lot harder to pinpoint where the shooters came from–most of the gunfire felt like they were coming from in front of me.
  • Continuing my point above, the player will not maximize his environmental awareness because he can’t properly pinpoint or even detect another player’s footsteps or gunfire.
  • Headphones with microphone attachments were a godsend since they allowed us to communicate with each other. Using a speaker system would also create an echo in your group’s comms, annoying your squadmates.

Verdict

I think it really depends on your hardware, but for me there’s a massive difference between playing this game with headphones (or even earphones) on, or using speakers. If you happen to use speakers, make sure your sound system is capable of surround sound, and that you’re not going to disturb anyone.
