Fifth Star Piece Walkthrough Tips

Getting the password.

The password to enter the locked area in the Sunken Ship where King Calamari is can only be obtained by solving six puzzles in the dungeon. You will have a limited number of attempts to solve some of the puzzles, though you can just exit and re-enter the room to reset your tries until you solve each of them.

First Puzzle

The first puzzle requires you to guide the Paratroopa carrying an iron ball which must be dropped on the switch above.

Second Puzzle

The second puzzle requires you to position the moving trampolines so that the iron ball that drops from the left side bounces off of them and lands on the switch above. Hit the J blocks to stop a trampoline from moving. This puzzle may take some trial-and-error but should not be to difficult to clear.

Third Puzzle

The third puzzle requires you to reach the switch at the top of the structure. While this may sound simple, there are several walls inside the structure that you will not be able to see as you enter it.

You can check your position and number of steps with the X button. Feel out the path by using the Confirm and Jump buttons until you reach the switch at the top.

Fourth Puzzle

The fourth puzzles requires you to follow a floating coin that will spawn more coins as you catch up to it. Be sure to grab the spawn coins as well before they disappear to clear the puzzle.

Fifth Puzzle

The fifth puzzle requires you to use cannonballs fired from each cannon (starting from the leftmost one) to hit the J blocks of in front of the cannon next to it and so on. This is mostly a test of your timing which should not be too difficult to clear.

Sixth Puzzle

The sixth and final puzzle requires you to have both switches pressed down. Move to the right side of the room where the barrels are stacked and look for one of them that has a darker colored than the rest (facing the front of the stack of barrels correctly, it is in the middle stack, in the front at the very top).

Jump on barrel to drop it down the stack. Then, jump on it repeatedly until you can roll it on the switch on the right side of the room. Afterwards, step on the switch on the left side to clear the puzzle.

Save before the King Calamari fight.

Be sure to save your game after getting through the password-locked door. The fight against King Calamari will not start once you give the password so feel free to save or heal your party beforehand.

Take down Hidon posing as a treasure chest.

Hidon is disguised as a treasure chest in the room with the cannon facing the star block. You will immediately recognize this chest as it is sitting on top of a stack of crates.

Before taking on Hidon, save your game (it will be quite difficult to take down). Note that Hidon will summon four (4) Goombettes immediately at the start of the fight. Hidon also uses a lot of powerful attacks, especially when it is hit with a normal attack.

Upon defeating Hidon, the chest it uses to hide itself will contain the powerful Safety Badge which nullifies most negative status effects except KO.

Mario’s doppelganger moves symmetrically.

The doppelganger that appears as you go deeper into the Sunken Ship moves symmetrical to Mario himself. You can use the difference in movement (especially when jumping) to reach the next room or use the doppelganger as a platform to reach hidden chests.

Get the Safety Ring.

Another powerful accessory, the Safety Ring, can be found in the hidden room behind the barrel of the underwater area in front of Johnny’s room. Be sure to grab it before progressing further into the level.

Fifth Star Piece Boss Strategies

Defeat King Calamari.

When fighting King Calamari, try to keep everyone’s HP high as some of them may unable to act. This prevents you from healing characters using items or skills or attacking King Calmari.

Fire and Fear are effective against King Calamari so Mario and Bowser will be useful during the fight. It is also recommended to equip Fearless Pins on characters so that they are not affected by the status once King Calamari targets them.

Defeat Johnny.

When fighting Johnny, avoid taking out all of his minions as this will trigger a 1v1 battle between him and Mario. This situation is hard to win against since Johnny deals massive damage himself.

To avoid having to 1v1 him, try to keep at least one of his allies alive. This way, you can deal with Johnny and his minion with a full party.

Fear is also extremely effective against Johnny so having Bowser in the party will be to your advantage.

Defeat Speardovich.

For this fight, be sure to have Mallow and Peach in the party. Have Mallow use Psycho to distinguish between the real Speardovich and the copies that he summons. You can also tell where the real boss is based on the attacks used by the copies (they do not use the same as the real one) and their turn order.

Peach, meanwhile, should focus on healing and reviving party members that are hit with Speardovich powerful multi-target attack.

Alternatively, you can also put Geno in to buff allies with Geno Wave. Just remember to keep all character’s HP high using items or skills throughout the fight.
