Things to Do After Beating the Game

Below are some activities to engage in after clearing the game’s main story if you are aiming for 100% completion.

Fight Culex 3D (new optional superboss) in Monstro Town.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Culex Location

The post-game stages also allow you to battle the game’s new hidden superboss Culex 3D who is essentially a Boss Rematch version of the original Culex. Note that you will need to obtain the special key item Extra Shiny Stone to unlock the fight against Culex 3D at Monstro Town.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Culex 3D (Intro)

Culex 3D replaces the previous version as the hardest fight in the game. Make sure that your party is at a significantly high level and equipped with the best weapons, armor, and accessories before taking on the enhanced form of Culex after beating the game.

Super Mario RPG Remake Culex 3D Secret Boss Guide

Stocking up on as many healing items as you can before attempting to fight Culex 3D to increase your survivability during the secret boss fight.

Rewards you with the Crystal Shard.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Culex 3D Defeated

Upon defeat, Culex 3D will drop the Crystal Shard special item which serves no practical use in the game. It is simply proof of your conquest of the game’s most demanding challenge if you are aiming for 100% completion.

Name How to Get Description
Crystal Shard Defeat Culex 3D (Post-Game Superboss Rematch) A symbol of ultimate strength.

Beating Culex 3D is required for completing the Monster List and getting 100% completion.

Note that you must defeat Culex 3D to register all of his data in the Monster List. Filling out all entries in the compendium unlocks the Monster Trophy which is also just a memento to recognize the feat.

Collect all music tracks (Sound Player).

As mentioned, you will not have access to all BGM tracks by simply beating the game once. Because of this, try to spend the post-game stages unlocking all remaining scores until you are able to listen to all of them in the Sound Player.

Clear Boss Rematch battles.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Johnny Boss Rematch 2 (Post-Game)

Unlocking and completing all Boss Rematch battles is also a good activity to do in post-game. In addition to providing a good challenge, post-game bosses will yield special rewards in the form of new equipment, key items, and collectibles.

Attain “Mario Sage” status after clearing all Boss Rematch battles.

Apart from the rewards received for clearing each Boss Rematch (including the final rematch against Culex 3D), you do not actually get any major prize once all of them have been completed. Frog Sage will simply start referring to you as “Mario Sage” onwards when talking to him as recognition of your strength in battle.

Complete Thought Peek texts (Monster List).

You can also revisit the locations to battle enemies who you have not used Mallow’s Thought Peek ability on to register all Thought Peek texts in the Monster List. Using the special move on an enemy lets you read their mind, revealing interesting or funny details about them in the game.

Collect all mini game and side quest rewards.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Cliff Climb Mini Game

Spending time on mini games and side quests you have not completed to obtain all possible rewards from them is also recommended once you are in post-game. Feel free to go back to optional activities to get Frog Coins, Flowers, and other collectibles you missed out getting prior to clearing the main story.

  1. I had hoped that Luigi would be a party member in the remake, he’s in the SNES Instruction manual for the og Mario RPG and he’s in photos from the beta.
