Not likely to be possible even in the remake.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Battle

While yet to be confirmed, it is expected that Mario, the game’s main protagonist, cannot be removed from the party in Super Mario RPG Remake. As with the original game, Mario cannot be switched out of the active team so he will always be participating in all regular story and post-game battles.

Mario, however, is a mandatory character for good reason as he is an incredibly powerful attacker for the party, especially after you equip him with his best gear. He does suffer from having no means to apply support effects and buffs to allies, though Geno, Peach, and Mallow are more than enough to fill these roles.
