What are Action Commands?

Super Mario RPG Remake - Action Command

Action Commands is a key battle mechanic in Super Mario RPG Remake that allows you to increase damage dealt to enemies or reduce incoming damage taken by allies.

Time button presses to gain the advantage in battle.

By pressing buttons at specific windows during battle, your attacks will deal more damage than normal on targets. Similarly, inputting a button with good timing when attacked may minimize the damage you receive from an enemy’s own attack.

The Action Command window is indicated by “!” on your character.

Action Command timing is indicated by the “!” (exclamation point) appearing above your character when performing attacks or when about to be hit by the enemy. This feature was added in the remake to make combat easier compared to the original version which did not have the visual indicator.

Action Commands can be disabled during specific battles.

Certain enemies encountered throughout the main story can disable Action Commands, denying you the chance to exploit the mechanic during battle. For these situations, it is recommended to rely on using better equipment and employing keener strategy to win the fight.

An indicator in red will appear below an ability’s name whenever Action Commands are disabled.

Types of Action Commands

Normal Attack

Super Mario RPG Remake - Normal Attack Action Command

Press the button when the Action Command indicator appears during a normal attack to deal increased damage to the target. The remake also includes an additional multi-target effect during timed normal attacks, allowing you to hit more than one target in battle.

Note that Action Command timings for normal attacks vary based on a character’s equipped weapon.

Special Move

Super Mario RPG Remake - Special Move Action Command

Action Commands during Special Moves are divided into four (4) types which are summarized below.

Special Move Action Command Input Types

Action Command Type Input Type
Timed Press Press the button just before the attack hits the target or just before the move ends.
Charge Press and hold down the button and release it after a specific period.
Rapid Press Press the button repeatedly (mash).
Directional Pad Operate the directional pad.

As you play through the game, you will notice that certain characters’ Special Move Action Commands are easier to execute than others. In these cases, feel free to swap out party members who have moves that are too difficult to time than others.

Defense

Super Mario RPG Remake - Defense Action Command

Timing your input just before the enemy’s attack lands can reduce the damage your character receives. There are, however, certain moves used by enemies which cannot be defended against using Action Commands.

A shield effect now appears on your character whenever they successfully mitigate the damage done by an enemy’s attack. This visual indicator was not found in the original version.
