Seventh Star Piece Walkthrough Tips
Spend time getting the best weapons, armor, and accessories for each character during the end-game stages.
It is recommended to try and get the best equipment for each character as you go through the last two dungeons of the game. Some of the strongest gear can also be acquired from completing the 6 doors of Bowser’s Keep (challenge courses) described below.
Take on the 6 Doors of Bowser’s Keep.
The 6 doors of Bowser’s Keep consist of different challenges that you can clear to obtain some of the best weapons in the game. These include the Sonic Cymbal for Mallow, the Star Gun for Geno, and the Drill Claw for Bowser.
Below is a summary of all Bowser’s Keep challenges in the game.
Bowser’s Keep Challenges
Door Challenge | Details |
---|---|
Battle Course | This challenge requires you to complete a series of forced battles so bring your best party and equipment before taken it on. Geno’s Star Gun and Bowser’s Drill claw can be obtained in this type of challenge. |
Action Course | This challenge is essentially a test of platforming, requiring you to go through a course that requires jumping and positioning. Mallow’s Sonic Cymbal can be obtained in this type of challenge. |
Puzzle Course | This challenge consists of different tests of memory and logic such as quizzes and counting barrels. |
Purchase equipment from the shop between The Gate and Bowser’s Keep.
There is a weapon shop between The Gate and Bowser’s Keep that sells some of the strongest armor in the game. Most of these items can be purchased with Coins which can easily be farmed via the infinite Coin block at Bowser’s Keep.
Save the game after defeating Factory Chief.
The game’s last save point is found after defeating Factory Chief at the Factory. Be sure to create a save data here before taking on Smithy, the game’s final boss, so that you can easily restart the fight if you lose.
Seventh Star Piece Boss Strategies
Defeat Magikoopa.
Magikoopa uses powerful all-target attacks and will often summon a random minion to protect him from your own attacks. Try to take down the summoned enemy quickly to stack as much damage on Magikoopa as possible.
Defeat Boomer.
The key to defeating Boomer is to have resistance against mortal blows (instant death) attacks.
Recommended accessories for fighting Boomer are Attack Scarf (Mario only), Quartz Charm, Jinx Belt, and Safety Ring.
Be sure Peach has instant death resist so she can immediately revive fallen party members. Try to minimize the use of healing items so you can save them for the next battle against Exor.
Defeat Exor.
Taking out Exor’s eyes will remove the barrier that reduces damage done to its body. Try to use multi-target attacks to damage all of Exor’s parts to reduce the number of attacks it can do to your party.
Exor’s parts will be revived throughout the fight so be sure to stack as much damage as you can on the main body when it is more vulnerable.
Defeat Countdown.
Sleep and Mushroom resistance will be key here as Count Down frequently inflicts status conditions to prevent you from acting. Be sure Peach is using the Safety Ring so she can attend to allies that are low on HP or are inflicted with Sleep or Mushroom.
The attacks that Count Down will use are based on the where its yellow clock hands are at. Use the table bellow to help you figure out its next move.
Time | Move |
---|---|
1:00 | Ice Rock, Crystal |
3:00 | Recover |
5:00 | Aurora Flash |
6:00 | Mega Recover |
7:00 | Water Blast |
9:00 | None |
10:00 | Petal Blast |
12:00 | Corona |
The Ding-A-Lings will also accompany Count Down during the fight. They will occasionally shout “Time is marching on!” which lets Count Down skip to the next hour.
Try to defeat the Ding-A-Lings first before Count Down. Otherwise, you will not receive any Coins for beating the boss.
Defeat Cloaker and Domino.
Cloaker and Domino excel at physical and magic attacks respectively. Try to focus attacks on one or the other only to quickly begin the fight against either Cloaker fused with Mad Adder or Domino fused with Earth Link.
Be sure to time defense Action Commands well to reduce the damage the boss deals, especially during the second phase.
Defeat Clerk.
The Clerk does not have any particularly powerful attacks which makes him quite easy to deal with. Just have Geno buff the party with Geno Wave to take out the bosses quickly while ignoring the two minions.
Feel free to spend FP during the fight as it will recover afterwards.
Defeat Manager.
The Manager will be accompanied by three minions which should not do too much damage if you are using end-game armor. Use Geno Wave to buff your characters and focus all attacks on Director to end the fight fast.
Do not bother taking out any of the minions as Manager will just summon more of them during the fight.
Defeat Director.
This fight is very similar to the one against Manager, though Director is stronger and is aided by up to 4 minions at a time. The same strategy applies so set up Geno Wave on the party first and unload on Director while ignoring the adds.
Defeat Factory Chief and Gunyolk.
Factory Chief and Gunyolk are a formidable boss duo, owing to their massive firepower. Gunyolk is particularly dangerous as it is able to use the powerful Breaker Beam attack every 2nd turn.
Peach will likely be busy healing the entire party all at once during the fight so be sure to reserve some FP for here. Try to take advantage of Gunyolk’s vulnerable to status conditions to reduce the number of actions their side has in battle.
You can also have Mallow bombard Gunyolk with Snowy or Shocker, though be prepared to revive him a few times because of his low durability.
Defeat Smithy (final boss).
First Phase
It is highly recommended to go into the final battle with Mario, Geno, and Peach. Geno should set up Geno Wave buffs while Peach covers healing duties. During the first phase, focus on taking down the Smelter first as it will constantly bombard your entire party with powerful magic attacks.
Use Rock Candy if you have any to damage all enemies, including Smithy, after the Smelter produces liquid metal. Rock Candy will deal even more damage if you have Geno Wave set up prior to using the item.
Since Smithy and Smelter will constantly use attacks that target your entire party, have Peach heal everyone with Group Hug. You may not get your turn in time to heal each party member one by one so always use Group Hug to keep everyone alive during the fight.
Second Phase
Smithy will frequently change forms during the second phase of the fight. Each type of head and their weaknesses are described below.
Head | Details | Weaknesses |
---|---|---|
Normal Head | Smithy’s default head. | None |
Tank Head | Has access to powerful physical attacks and a mortal blow attack. Has high physical defense. | Lightning |
Magic Head | Has access to powerful magic attacks. Has low physical defense but no elemental weaknesses. | Normal Attacks |
Mask Head | Has access to healing spells. Has high physical defense. | Ice |
Treasure Head | Has access to random status-inflicting attacks. | Fire |
It is very important for peach to have the Safety Ring equipped during this phase to be able to resist mortal blows from Smithy’s tank head form. This way, Peach can always revive fallen allies so you do not get wiped out too easily against the final boss.
Be sure to set up buffs using Geno’s Geno Wave again. Then, focus all attacks on Smithy’s main body while ignoring all the other parts.
When Smithy changes to his magic head, pummel him with normal attacks. You should be able to take out a good chunk of his HP especially after Geno has buffed your character already.
Use Rock Candy when Smithy changes to his Mask Head to continue depleting his HP. He will have high physical and magic defense when in this form so all other forms of damage aside from using the item will not be significant.
Note that Smithy’s mask head form can remove the effects of Geno Wave so be sure to use Rock Candy before he can do so. Smithy will never use any damage-dealing attacks when in mask head form so feel free to reapply buffs if you need to.
Always prioritize recovery throughout the fight. Do not hesitate to use as many Pick Me Ups as you can for emergencies as this is the game’s final battle.
