Death Stranding - ESRB Rating Released

Death Stranding received its ESRB rating of Mature. The information can be found on ESRB's website along with a rating summary.

ESRB Rating Finally Announced

Death Stranding finally received an ESRB rating of M for Mature. The rating summary can be found on the ESRB website.

Content of the summary

The website shows a rating as well as a summary of features. Traits such as the character’s role, the use of firearms, some graphic and disturbing cutscenes, evidence of nudity, and use of profanity can be found in the summary. That being said, these features capture blood, intense violence, partial nudity, and strong language, which all add up to its M rating. According to ESRB’s guide, the M rating is suitable for consumers who are at least 17 years old.

Scenes that show the use of firearms

The use of firearms was portrayed across several trailers. In the Release Date Reveal Trailer, we found Cliff wielding firearms while accompanied by soldiers. We also saw a battlefield of what looked like a scene from World War I that Sam had to cross. Later on, some gameplay involving gunfire and then a disturbing cutscene of a dead Bridges Baby were shown.

Players use machine guns, grenades, and shotguns to kill enemies; firefights are highlighted by realistic gunfire, large splashes of blood, and cries of pain.

Scenes that involve intense violence, partial nudity, and profanity

While we haven’t seen many of these instances, there are plenty of other scenes showing graphic and disturbing things in the trailers. All of the trailers featured themes of violence or other intensely graphic imagery..

Cutscenes contain more intense instances of violence: a man and an infant shot-the latter, accidentally (blood splatter appears below the infant); a character shooting a comatose patient in the head; a man stabbing himself repeatedly in the distance. A handful of scenes depict a character with his buttocks exposed. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” appear in the dialogue.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board or ESRB is a website that offers an overview of games to help consumers make informed choices. Aside from the rating, the summary serves as a decent source for consumers to know about what they’ll be getting into.
