Death Stranding - What are Beached Things?

The E3 2018 Teaser Trailer which was posted for more than a year ago gave a glimpse of new entities called Beached Things or BTs which will appear in the upcoming game Death Stranding.

Beached Things

The supernatural entities stranded in the world of Death Stranding are called Beached Things or BT for short. They first appeared during the E3 2018 trailer. In the video, Sam was about to pick up a photograph that was lying on the mud when a mysterious hand print formed beneath it. Oblivious to its presence, Sam attempted to reach for the photo but was stopped by a mysterious lady. The entity soon bumped into Sam’s supply crate before turning around. Without a moment to spare, the pair was able to back away. We later found out that this lady is named Fragile. She claims to have the ability to see any BT nearby.

Fast forward to the six-minute mark and we witnessed even more manifestations of the BT. This time, they took the form of floating, human-shaped wisps. Each of them had a long appendage sticking out which looked like umbilical cords.

Near the end of the video, we saw a bit of gameplay where it had started raining. We saw that the player brought Sam out to investigate an unknown location. When Sam stopped moving, a cluster of wisps spotted him. Here, the player tried to outrun them, but then the mud grew thicker, which was shown when Sam struggled to move across the swamp. After covering a short distance, the floating entities drew close and held him down. In an instant, other figures started to emerge from the mud and tugged Sam into the void.

Types of Beached Things

According to a recent tweet from Kojima, there are different kinds of Beached Things, even though the names themselves will not be mentioned. The floating ones that we saw in the trailer are the Gazers, the hands that appear from the mud are the Hunters, and the huge entities collectively are known as Catchers.
