How to Upgrade Equipment
Weapons, primary armor, and secondary armor can be upgraded by selecting other equipment to be used as materials. Note that you can only use materials of the same equipment category as the gear you plan to upgrade or the appropriate upgrade material.
If you use the same type of equipment to upgrade your weapon or armor, it will gain 1.5 times more EXP as well.

Equipment Evolution
You can continue upgrading weapons and armor after reaching their maximum upgrade level through equipment evolution. The process is similar to releasing the level cap of equipment and can done in multiple stages depending on the gear you have.
Equipment Evolution Materials
Equipment evolution materials are obtained in Ruins Dive. Each type of equipment uses a specific type of evolution material which can be obtained on different days of the week.

Selling Equipment
It is recommended to sell unneeded equipment if you will not use them for upgrading weapons as they will simply take up space in your inventory. Be sure to sell them off before farming quests for high level equipment. You will earn a good amount of money (Aurum) this way as well.
Equipment Evolution Material Synthesis
Light stones of certain ranks can be synthesized to create one of higher rank which can be used in equipment evolution.
As an example, you can fuse 10 S rank light stones to make 1 SS rank one using this method.

What is the recommended weapons to start with as (free to play) player? I am assuming B rank to begin with and slow transition to A then follow S. It will be a long run but I’m pretty sure that is how the game intended to be played
