Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon - Encounter New Island Scan Pokemon: News

The Island Scan returns to Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon. Combined with the return of the National Dex, this news hints at the comeback of previous games' Pokemon.

Encounter new Island Scan Pokemon

The Island Scan, a feature that debuted in Sun and Moon and offered players the chance to search for rare Pokemon, will return to Ultra Sun and Moon. The recent trailer shows that Ultra Sun and Moon will reintroduce several species of rare Pokemon. Currently, the list includes the fire type Charmander, the grass type Grovyle, and the water type Greninja.

Below is the English trailer which showcases the return of the Island Scan at the one-minute mark.

Island Scan in Sun and Moon

In Sun and Moon, the Island Scan set a maximum of four obtainable Pokemon each day. With one Pokemon appearing on each island, trainers had to hop from one island to the next to track them all. As a daily event, the set of Pokemon that appeared varied depending on the day on the player’s 3DS calendar. In total, players could obtain 28 Pokemon through this method.

Compatibility with the National Dex

One of the features absent from Sun and Moon was the National Dex. This meant that players could not view the dex entries of certain Pokemon, such as those obtained from the Island Scan. Since the Pokemon obtainable using this method made up a moderate chunk of the total species obtained in Alola, players missed out on valuable information that the new dex would have been able to offer.

Fortunately in Ultra Sun and Moon, the addition of the National Dex will enlighten players with the Pokemon’s Dex entries. This will help players appreciate even those species that are not considered native to the region.

Possibility of Including More Starters/Species

In Sun and Moon, trainers were able to capture the Johto starter Pokemon in their basic forms Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile. The case is the same for the Unova starter Pokemon, which only appeared in their stage 2 forms Serperior, Emboar, and Samurott.

Following the above pattern, the addition of the basic Pokemon Charmander may indicate that the new games will also introduce the rest of the Kanto starters. The same could also be said about Greninja. It would be underwhelming for only the Kanto and Kalos starters to be complete, so we hope to also see the rest of the Hoenn region starters join Grovyle.

The starters in Sun and Moon are not the only ones on the roster. Around 80% of the total Pokemon found using this method are not starters, which may signal that apart from the speculation above, players will be able to encounter Pokemon from regions where these starters do not appear. Two regions where the rest of the Island Scan Pokemon could come from are Johto and Unova.
