Weapon Guide

Below are brief descriptions of some of Jin Sakai’s weapons in Ghost of Tsushima, including basic controls and the best ways to use them in battle.

Sakai Storm

The Sakai Storm is your main melee weapon for most direct encounters in the game because of its versatility. By changing stances during combat, you will be able to adapt to various enemies and exploit their weaknesses.

Ghost of Tsushima - Sakai Storm

Basic Controls

Command Input
Light/Quick Attack PlayStation 4 - Square Button
Heavy Attack PlayStation 4 - Triangle Button
Block PlayStation 4 - L1 Button (hold)
Parry PlayStation 4 - L1 Button (tap)
Change Stance PlayStation 4 - R2 Button

Practice parrying.

Tapping the L1 button just as your opponent’s attack is about to connect allows you to parry them. This leaves the enemy in a brief stunned state and open for counterattacks. Note that performing a parry also lets you accumulate resolve which is good for taking in multiple foes.

It is also possible to deflect projectiles, particularly arrows, using the Sakai Storm.

Perfect Parry

You can upgrade the parry into a perfect parry by unlocking it under Techniques (to be confirmed). Time a parry at the last second before your opponent’s attack hits to execute a perfect parry which can be followed up by a powerful counterattack. Significantly more Resolve charges are accumulated this way compared to a normal parry.

Learn to cancel slow attacks.

Canceling your slow attacks into swift strikes is an essential skill to learn for fighting various enemies in the game. Many opponents will take advantage of the slow start-up that some of your moves have and will intercept it before it comes out. By canceling an attack into another, you can surprise your foe and hit them as they come in.

Canceling attacks is also a good way to bait opponents into reacting with something. Observe their behavior as you wind up your slow attack and decide whether to cancel or not.

Half Bow

The halfbow is a ranged weapon that is used for quickly picking off or chipping away the health of foes before they come into melee range. Using the halfbow requires arrows which can be crafted using gathered materials. It is inferior to the longbow in terms of overall damage.
