[Grand Theft Auto V / GTA 5] Tips and Tricks: Sumo

This article contains tips and tricks in winning in Sumo Mode. This game mode is available in Grand Theft Auto V [GTA 5].

Tips and Tricks: Sumo Mode

Sumo Mode is a game mode in Grand Theft Auto V [GTA 5] that appears similarly to a demolition derby with vehicles. Players can either run solo or team as they pit their vehicles against one another. The mechanics follow similarly to that of a Sumo Match. Players must knock out other players from the ring in order to win the match. Solo Players may be thrown into a Battle Royale set-up in which he must fight other cars to knock out other cars. Team plays can involve a “Bait and Switch” strategy which can easily knock down other cars.

As a means to win in Sumo Mode, here are some tips to help win in this game mode.

Burst your speed tactically

Bursting speed off the bat may be more detrimental than it is helpful. In Sumo mode, the handbrakes are disabled. This means, the player can’t stop himself from falling off if the enemy manages to move away. Another is that there are times that lessening the speed will provide more help than burning the rubber.

Reverse Trick

The Reverse Trick is letting the opponent think that one is losing power. However, hitting the reverse can also all the player to redirect the incoming blow. As the player runs in reverse, turn the car immediately to let the opposing car brush against the side before giving a nudge to move them out of the ring. This trick takes a bit of precise timing as running in reverse may also get one thrown off.

In Death match, this trick may not work due to the shrinking size of the ring.

Team Play: Bait & Switch

If playing with a team, players can choose a smaller can to lure into a bigger car. Also, the bigger car can lock horns with the other bigger cars while the smaller car adds a small push. This small push can help especially in the last portions of the match.

Claim some territory

Claiming a particular area such as one with certain obstacles can prevent a player from falling off. In a place that has no obstacles, the best place to stay is in the center. Since the car take a large amount of damage, the center can prevent the player from being thrown off. At the same time, the player only needs the same amount of distance to throw the opposing player out.
