Who and what is Necrozma?

Necrozma is another legendary pokemon that appears in the generation of Pokemon Sun and Moon. However, in the prequel, the story only mentions him briefly. Necrozma takes on a bigger role in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Pokemon USUM) where it absorbs Solgaleo and Lunala. Its power is so vast that it appears to completely override the consciousness of both of the legendary pokemon.

As of now, the creature’s origins are unknown. The story goes that Necrozma sleeps underground. His peculiar shape and colour has led to many of the citizens of the Alola region to believe he came from another world. Necrozma’s dark crystalline form makes the others believe that he is the absence of light. His prism-like form and black coloration allows it to absorb light. Once it absorbs light, it can unleash Prismatic Light. Unfortunately, Necrozma is vicious in nature and will destroy anything within its reach. As an Ultra Beast, Necrozma is capable of absorbing other creatures. Thus, the creation of the new Necrozma Types.

Solgaleo is the legendary in Pokemon Sun. When Lillie approaches the Altar of the Sun, her Cosmog (who she affectionately names “Nebby”) evolves into Solgaleo. As a Psychic and Steel type, it is the only known pokemon that use the move Sunsteel Strike. According to the pokedex, Solgaleo lives in another dimension. Its body is so bright that it can light up any form of darkness.

However, with Necrozma now in play, Solgaleo now takes a different form. Its formerly white mane now is covered with the dark crystals of Necrozma. With Necrozma completely overwhelming its mind, it becomes one of the new Necrozma Types: Dusk Mane Necrozma. Wielding both Solgaleo’s power and its own, the sun version of the Necrozma Types can unleash devastating damage. To what ends, nobody is sure what exactly Dusk Mane Necrozma wants. When Necrozma absorbs Solgaleo, the former Emmisary of the Sun seeks nothing more but destruction.

Citizens of Alola honour Lunala as the emissary of the moon. She appears as a legless bat, absorbing the moonlight in her wings. When she has absorbed enough light, she then spreads her wings to light up the night sky. When she reaches Full Moon form, her third eye opens and she’s able to unleash a devastating attack. Her signature move is Moongeist Beam.

However once the Ultra Beast absorbs Lunala, he reveals one of the new Necrozma Types: Dawn Wing Necrozma. No longer gracing the night with her light, Lunala’s consciousness has been wiped by the ultra beast. It’s possible that she also becomes more vicious like all of the Necrozma Types when it becomes Dawn Wing Necrozma.
