Summarizing the Famitsu interview leads to a couple of findings such as additional content and new mechanics USUM.
Added Content Surpasses Emerald
Through the lens of a player who played Pokemon Emerald or Platinum, it seems that Ultra Sun and Moon delivers even more added content. These changes should not only affect the main storyline but also the game mechanics themselves.
Looking closely at Emerald, the added content stems from slight modifications in the story. One change is the intervention of Rayquaza during the game’s retained cutscenes. The biggest content additions occur in exclusive events (rather than in-game experiences), such as when Mew appears in Faraway Island. As for modifications in the game itself, it showcases the Battle Frontier which has minimal effect on the story and more for the enjoyment of the player. Although it evidently improves on the battles, this leaves more to be desired story-wise.
Similarities to Platinum
Platinum similarly focuses on a new Legendary and the Distortion World while attempting to detach from the usual formula of the games it succeeded. It gives a nice touch to the capability of the Nintendo DS handheld. This feature enabled Trainers to look at the game’s environments in a different way. Odd waterfalls and unique textures abound in the lair of the Renegade Pokemon.
It looks less stale than Emerald’s because of the story content, as it expanded the roster with Story characters during post-game such as Looker, Charon, Buck, and the Frontier Brains. These games also established a connection between the game’s Lake Trio to the legendary Pokemon, which is similar to Suicune being more amiable to the protagonist in Pokemon Crystal.
Story Content is double the length of Sun and Moon’s
Ultra Sun and Moon starts off with videos focusing on new Z-moves for both new and old Pokemon. It then shows the involvement of Necrozma, the Prism Pokemon which previously had minimal appearance in Sun and Moon. This game appears to be an extension of Sun and Moon, as it aims to elaborate on the mysteries that surround the Ultra Beasts.
New Trailers then expose us to new characters, the Ultra Recon Squad which appear to be people that came from Ultra Wormhole to tease players of their origins and purpose. Ultra Sun and Moon should introduce a different perspective on the region with the taglines mentioning that: “This isn’t the Alola you thought you knew.”
Story Content Size
As a game that is said to be 1.125 times bigger than Sun and Moon’s, the upcoming games are said to contain twice as much story content than those before it. The trailers have already shown that these games will expand on the story of the existence of Ultra Wormholes, the realm of the Ultra Beasts, and these mysterious creatures.
Rotom Loto Makes Gameplay Easier
Source: Official Pokemon Website
Borrowing from the elements of X and Y is Rotom Loto, which are identical to the O-Powers. During the time of Generation 6, players were able to conveniently breed Pokemon thanks to the Hatching O-Power. This proved to be an asset when it came to team-building as it lessens the time spent to obtain a desired Pokemon. It also came with other O-Powers such as Experience related and Money related. Combining all these features, this affirms that the New Mechanics USUM Make Gameplay Easier.
Fortunately, these features will make a comeback. Moreover, battles during story play will be more flexible with the arrival of more than 2 Z-moves. This will be evident once the Trainer has sufficiently raised his bond with his Rotom Dex.
The Pokemon USUM release date is set on November 17, 2017.
